I'm not a driver either, but I had some lessons back in the day and when I asked the uncle who gave me my first one "Do we swerve for butterflies?" (Yes, ik, a ridiculous question) He just looked at me deadpan and was like "No, and we also don't swerve for birds, or squirrels, or even cats or dogs, and do you know why?" And then he explained to me that when you swerve you are very likely to cause an accident and could collide with another vehicle and then asked me whether I'd prefer to kill an animal or a person, if forced to choose 😅 I asked what the recommended course of action was instead. He said if you have time, you can slow down and then brake if it is safe to do so and the animal hasn't moved. He also added that if the animal is large enough that hitting it could damage your vehicle enough to bring harm to the occupants, such as a deer or larger, then swerving is the better option, because staying on course is a guaranteed accident whereas swerving is only a potential one. At the time I thought he sounded cold and insensitive, but in hindsight it makes sense to me because who wants to be the reason that somebody's loved one doesn't come home that night just because you didn't want to hurt a kitty or puppy. 😅

Truth in Television. Hearing you say 'this ain't Hollywood' gave me a smile as I remembered Sam and Dean taking a tour of Hollywood in SPN 2x19 and being shown the Gilmore Girls lot (with Jared's/Sam's awkward expression). One of my favourite things about Lorelai is also one of my favourite things about Brooklyn Nine-Nine: no matter how quirky and predisposed to bouts of silliness the characters are, they never let it bring down their high level of professional competence and responsibility. (Except during Hallowe'en Heist episodes.) Kirk's an actor, yes. Licenced to carry a Gunn. I don't know if the irony is deliberate that when Lane hides her drumsticks and enters her mom's hymn group, they're singing 'What A Friend We Have in Jesus', which is about using prayer as a means of relieving yourself of your emotional baggage. My dad's philosophy when it comes to driving is not to swerve if a small animal runs in front of you, on account of it being dangerous. If that's the criterion for judgement, then Jess would deserve to get blamed for the accident. However, I, who am not a driver, would also say that would depend on whether there were any other cars or blind corners nearby, and whether it was a dog or cat, in which case it would be right to try to avoid it if to do so would not cause a multi-vehicle, high-speed, heavy-impact, or otherwise dangerous collision. I think the salient point here is what Lorelai said. Jess was driving the car, which makes him automatically more responsible for the accident than Rory even if the collision wasn't his fault, even if Rory was telling him what to do. A hand on the wheel is worth two in the law book. (Sidenote: it's crazy to me that 17-year-olds are allowed to drive at all. If you can't be trusted to vote, you shouldn't be trusted to drive.)
