2023-08-04 01:52:49 +0000 UTCI get a really strong Buffy vibe from the last 2 minutes. Especially a vibe of Becoming Part 2. This ending has always struck me as a dam breaking for Phoebe - she's clung to Cole ever since Prue's death, and even before that he's represented her sense of self as an outsider wanting to be closer to her family, the way she felt before Season 1. So she's not just grieving for him here but also for Prue and for Cole as another lost family member. Fitting then that the last shot should be her being closely supported and embraced by her family. I see the tonic not as poison for Phoebe but as poison for her good side. To take it is to suppress her goodness, to not take it is to suppress the part of her individuality that led to her falling in love with Cole, and he with her. Either way she's going to be hurt terribly, and only by choosing good can she live with it.
