Xena: Warrior Princess 6x19 "Many Happy Returns" Reaction

Get you a woman who looks at you like Xena looks at Gabrielle. So much said in just a few short facial expressions, yet so much more left unsaid. Xena turns into a nervous little puppy when she presented that poem of love to Gabrielle. She basically gave her all her feelings for her in it, and doesn’t know what to do with herself except sit there and be the most anxious creature on the planet, wondering if Gabrielle will feel the same way for her, or if she’ll even recognize that the poem is her feelings for her that she can’t say out loud because she’s not good with words… like Sappho is. She lets the poem speak for her. “We captured lightning in a bottle.” - Rob Tapert

Self-awareness: Asserting that you are your own person One of the best things I love about ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ is the strong and substantial morals they have at the end of the episodes. Particularly those in the comedy episodes stand out to me. They may seem cheesy at a glance, but take the one in the season 6 episode, ‘Many Happy Returns’, for example. There is a female character that was raised to be a virgin sacrifice to the gods, and she doesn’t quite understand as to why that is a bad thing. She is psychologically conditioned to believe that the loss of her own life would be to save it and keep her soul pure. As is the belief of many religious zealot cults back in those times. This scene in particular is significant to talk about as a lot of people really do struggle with being their own person and following their own guide. Being their own leader and walking their own path in life. Being assertive and thinking for themselves. It’s tough for them because they are bombarded with all these doctrine conditioning's from religion, school, work, and many other different social circles. They’re always around these social circles that they just can’t be themselves because they’re constantly being asked to be something beyond what they already are or do something different to what they’re already doing and may enjoy doing. There’s always these ridiculously high standards and expectations to follow. Reaching these high standards, whether it be for a school grade or a work promotion or simply just to be taken seriously by their family, makes them feel like they’re just not good enough to their family or society. This is an important topic to talk about and too few are talking about it. I’m glad Xena did, even if only briefly. It’s enough to take the message in and realize for yourself that it is possible to follow your own intuition, and that you’re probably better off doing so because you’re not asked to achieve something more than what you already have or be something more than you already are, unless you feel it’s best that you should and it will make you feel good to do that at your own time and pace. It’s very difficult and stressful to comply to anybody else’s expectations but your own. It’s even difficult to meet your own expectations and achieve everything you want for yourself. But at least that’s a lot more realistic than the former because you don’t have to be something that you’re not to do it. “Always let your conscience be your guide.” - Jiminy Cricket
