2023-02-21 23:35:41 +0000 UTCOne other piece of context that I think helps explain this movie a bit is that it was pretty explicitly a response to the popularity of John Hughes teen dramas of the time. Everyone in John Hughes films, most explicitly in breakfast club, is more an archetype than a character, and Heathers takes some of those same archetypes, turns them up to 11 and examines at their dark sides. The harm of the stratification and hierarchy that a John Hughs high school represents, and the dangers of romanticizing the rebellious bad boy.

From the opening scene of veronica burried up to her neck, it masterfully blends this surreal over the top aesthetic with real serious issues in a way that imo manages to take everything to thr extreme, but without losing tension, or making the characters completely unbelievable.
