It would be very rare to get the mumps in the UK, because 90% have had the infant MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella) which protects against it. Not sure what the stat is in the US but perhaps Jake and Holt haven't been vaccinated because Holt was an infant in the 50s and Jake had his dad for a dad.
