Just the way Xena is looking at Gabrielle in that one scene with them together and especially when Gabrielle says “let’s just enjoy it while we can.” And she says “Yeah.” She’s absolutely whipped. Smitten. It’s like nothing would make her happier. This is her paradise. A small farm house with positive memories, a quiet and peaceful life and her soulmate by her side in everything. Yep. That’s exactly what Xena wants. She’s so in love with Gabrielle she cannot help it.

2023-11-28 20:08:50 +0000 UTCI like the scene in the house with Xena and Gabrielle for what it reveals about Xena but the ending scene as they’re riding out of the farm is even more substantial with that. Xena is lamenting how the quiet peaceful life is something she wished she had had instead of the life of following the sword because she was happy and she felt like she belonged in the short time she was on that farm as a child. Gabrielle immediately gets this expression on her face after she hears that that reads “well, if she’s telling me this, is she even happy now, here, with me?” Xena sees this and without even needing to ask Gabrielle what’s wrong, she says the perfect thing to reassure her that she wouldn’t have it any other way. That she was lucky then and she’s lucky now. And it sort of harkens back to the decision she made after getting her second chance in ‘Remember Nothing’. Only this time, the companion she’d have in her quiet peaceful farm life wouldn’t be a husband. It would be a wife. Gabrielle. See Gabrielle seemed to think Xena would want that without her. But Xena actually meant have it with her. And it’s just one of those moments where you realize their future together once the way of warrior got tiring would be to settle down on a quiet peaceful little farm like the one they’re riding out of at that moment. That they’d basically have the life Joxer and Meg had 25 years into the future from now. As Wife and Wife. And I feel like that was always a poignant and logical endgame for them were they to have a happy ending. To go back to this farm 10 something years down the line… and settle down together as a domestic family. Finally with a home of their own. Maybe a dog or two. Possibly even a child they could actually call their own no matter which one of them was the bearer of it. And it wouldn’t seem so far fetched because this episode, ‘Kindred Spirits’ and ‘Remember Nothing’ told us that that’s what they both wanted. The only reason Xena denied it in ‘Kindred Spirits’ was because it was with the Amazons. No other reason. She would have happily settled down with Gabrielle if not for that because all she wants is the quiet peaceful life too and her idea of “quiet peaceful life” was not with 30-something other scantily clad girls around with them. And I feel like this was the one thing Katherine Fugate got wrong about ‘When Fates Collide’. That Xena and Gabrielle wouldn’t want the quiet peaceful life. That that future was never right or in the cards for them. It was… It just wasn’t if it was not with each other. Which I feel was the main point she was making anyway, so it doesn’t actually matter. But still… neither Xena or Gabrielle had a problem with settling down. It just had to be under the right circumstances. With each other only. Nobody else involved except maybe their child. But I think as far both of them are concerned, as long as they were together, they were each other’s home. I feel that was always kind of the point of ‘Bitter Suite’. ‘Cause if you watch the show, you’ll see that their happiest moments are either at the start or at the end. Before or after all the drama and hustle and bustle. And as silly and campy as those moments often were, they were also, in their own way, the most realistic too. You ask anyone who watch Xena for the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle primarily and they will tell you that the campiest, most ridiculous episodes are also the ones that feel the most real for the couple because honestly, Xena and Gabrielle weren’t drama. They were just two outsiders that loved each other. They didn’t belong in the world, in common society. So they found and made their ‘home’ in each other. Xena still had shit to deal with. Gabrielle still had shit to deal with. But at the end of the day after they dealt with their shit together they retired to the bed rolls. And that’s why their love story is a queer love story. Their relationship was never really about high stakes. They were a pretty normal average boring couple. It’s everything else that was the fantasy and the drama. So the quiet peaceful life is very much them after all. And I’ve always really kind of loved that about them. That they were your every day real lesbian couple thrust into the nuttiness of the fantasy and not the other way around like all WLW couples seem to be. Do you know how many times I’ve come across TV shows/movies with WLW couples where nothing ever seems to really happen in it except the relationship? And it honestly confounds me that people actually love watching that shit when it’s so damn unrealistic.

She’s mine!” After not getting even so much as a kiss from Xena, Ares watches his Warrior Princess ride off with a smirking Battling Bard in tow, knowing that throughout all eternity, he will NEVER win her over from her! Lucy Lawless and Kevin Smith together are hilarious!
