Everybody talks about Gabrielle waking up after Xena kisses her. What gets me is Xena is suddenly in her warrior leathers again after it. A way of saying Xena is only who she is when she’s with Gabrielle. Which Xena has said herself before but this time is fully showcased. Xena literally cannot be Xena without knowing and loving Gabrielle. It’s so fucking beautiful. Honestly.

2023-11-28 18:47:35 +0000 UTCLiam, it’s actually the other way around. Many of the writers of Xena/Hercules are the same writers for The Lord Of The Rings films. So The Lord Of The Rings film series was likely inspired by this. I know it was a book series but the creators of the films likely took inspiration from Xena and specifically this series of episodes. I’d stake my life on it that the idea for The Lord Of The Rings trilogy came about because of The Ring Trilogy.

Xena does not know how to be normal around or with Gabrielle at all. And thank fucking god for it. Seriously… ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ was a masterclass on how to avoid the gay while simultaneously making it 10x more gay. Queer characters in TV shows today: “I love you.” “I’m in love with you.” “I miss you.” “I can’t be without you.” GABRIELLE: *encased around a ring of fire that only Gabrielle’s soulmate could get through and been awakened from a Sleeping Beauty-like slumber by Xena’s kiss* “I dreamed you'd come back for me." XENA: “It was like I was in a dream, too. I forgot everything. But even though I didn't remember you - I felt your presence - and knew that I would never be complete unless those shadows were brought into the light.” This was how they avoided the gay context. By either one of them saying high-romantic shit like this so ironically - the censorship actually benefitted us.

I mean how the hell is this not 1000x times gayer than “I’m in love with you”? That dialogue is insanely romantic and something you’d only say to your soulmate. The writers attempt to avoid the gay makes it significantly more gay. And they absolutely know it! This is why I will always have the greatest respect for them. Because they provided the gayest thing ever. Such charm. Much flirt. So romance.

2023-01-26 15:05:19 +0000 UTCYou're not wrong about everybody loving Gabrielle! :-) This whole three episode storyline is an epic highlight of Season 6 and a big favourite of mine and thought you would enjoy it. Beowulf is a great and worthy addition to the Xenaverse too. Seeing Gabrielle with long hair in her new costume is a great visual effectively blending old and new Gabby. What a journey it's been!
