So in case you don’t know, Liam. This first episode of Season 6 was written by Melissa Good (known as Merwolf). Melissa is a fanfiction writer who specifically is known for writing Xena and Gabrielle femslash fanfiction. Robert Tapert commissioned her to write a couple of scripts for Season 6. Some made it, some didn’t. The scripts that made it all way were for this episode and for ‘Legacy’. So if it seems like the physical and emotional intimacy between Xena and Gabrielle has ramped up since the last season where there was virtually none, … that’s the reason why. Fanfiction writer.
I may be wrong but I think that’s the first ever time that a creator of a TV show had brought in an actual fanfiction writer of a WLW ship that isn’t textually canon to write for them. Which means that Tapert, and pretty much the rest of the cast/crew agree with the X&G shipper fans that they are lovers. They just couldn’t make it textually canon due to severe network restrictions who did not want them to be a couple.
Believe me when I say that regardless of that - they still give you the greatest WLW love story ever told in TV art/entertainment.
Just thought you might like to know if you didn’t already 😙

That little romantic moment between Xena and Gabrielle always reminded me of Rick and Evie from ‘The Mummy Returns’ when Rick says “I thought I lost you for a moment there” after Evie was killed by Anck-Su-Namun and he didnt know if she could be resurrected and Evie responds with “For a moment there, you did.”
Same kind of thing only with this Xena was responsible for what killed Gabrielle until Ares resurrected her and she says “But you didn’t”.
Thing is she could have and it would be on her. Gabrielle just forgives her. It’s amazing the power of love these two have. And I’m so glad we have all of that intimacy back again after such a lack of it in Season 5.

I’ve always said Ares is like Spike.
Neither of them were evil as such but both were definitely antagonistic and ultimately the “dark side” for the heroine.

Seeing Xena willingly kiss Ares was like watching Buffy kiss Spike after he didn’t give up who the key was. Both definitely earned that kiss. Both were definitely bad for the heroine.

Heck yeah, new season! And how nice of them to name this first episode after England's chant for the World Cup. XD
Even though this premiere was not groundbreaking, you can already tell they are shifting back towards the character intimacy that was somewhat lost amidst the big plot points of season 5. For example, Eve and Varia had that slight romantic chemistry before Varia realised who Eve was. I have to say... even though I am not attracted to women, Tsianina Joelson (Varia) is STUNNINGLY beautiful. She was a former beauty queen and fitness model, and such a good fit for a 90s action star.
It was also nice to see them tying up some loose ends from last season such as Ares' mortality, the furies, and Eve's tattered reputation. Now that those are resolved, it'll be interesting to see how they treat the 25-year time jump. Xena and Gabrielle have been so tied up with finding Eve and fighting the gods that they have not yet explored where the life and people they left behind are now.
