Xena: Warrior Princess 5x21 "Eve" Full Reaction

Oh I had some choice words...

Xena: Warrior Princess 5x21 "Eve" Full Reaction

Comments

“Eve’s done. Eve’s cancelled” Yeah, we all felt that way. I’m sorry, Liam. 🥺

“She acknowledged Gabrielle as her aunty” Actually, I think that was meant as more of an insult because Gabrielle is much more than an aunty to Eve.

What was the character thinking? - Eve/Hope parallel  More episode parallels where I get inside the mind of the characters and artistically interpret what they might be thinking about in that moment. We have Xena and Gabrielle in one of their frequent fireside chats from the episode ‘Eve’. The conversation is about Xena’s daughter, Eve, how she’s turned evil, and that they have to consider killing her if they can’t reform her back to good. Then we have the scene from ‘Maternal Instincts’, where Gabrielle poisons her own daughter, Hope. I believe Gabrielle was thinking about these passed events while talking about this situation with Xena. The fact she asks her whether she could kill Eve and Xena replied with conviction that she could if she had to, must have triggered her memories on this and how much pain she felt for having to do it herself. As well as all the trauma she went through afterwards because her daughter was evil. Gabrielle wants to save Xena from feeling that same pain and from having to kill her own child on account of seriously bad circumstances. See, with Gabrielle, it’s justified because Hope couldn’t be changed. But Xena’s child wasn’t evil. She was just corrupted and conditioned to do evil things by the same person who did that to Xena. Gabrielle thinks she can try to change her back to good. And if not, she could still prevent Xena from killing Eve because she would kill her herself. That if worst comes to worst, the only thing she could do was prevent Xena from killing Eve by her own hand as that is what she had to do with Hope. Just the very fact that this is such familiar territory for Gabrielle, her thought process on it must have been all over the place sat by the fire talking with Xena about it all. So, there’s lots of conditions to peruse your thoughts on here. Eve is Rome’s champion under the guise of Livia, as well as the Bringer of Twilight, and the Messenger of Eli. She would never commit those crimes against the Elisians, but is now doing so because she never had the love and support of Xena and Gabrielle to guide her while growing up in Rome. You wouldn’t necessarily pick this lore up in the short scene you get, but something must have given Gabrielle a real kick to go talk to Eve alone without Xena’s awareness. I believe it was this. She was faced with the decision to kill her own daughter and did. Therefore, she wanted to prevent Xena from having to do the same, as she knows from firsthand experience that the pain is absolutely unbearable. She also knows that Xena would forever hate herself for it. As if she wasn’t dealing with enough guilt and regret already with seeking her redemption, now she has the blood on her daughter’s hands on her own hands too. Gabrielle realized this and decided to do something about it at the cost of her own life. Virgil: “What are you gonna do?” Gabrielle: “I’m gonna try and keep Xena from doing something she’d never forgive herself for.”

Killing off Joxer really was unnecessary.

Even then, Virgil going full dark mode feels....ehh. I get it, but WWJD?

Agreed with you about Joxer. Yes, he wasn't my or your all-time favourite character... but this is still someone who the show and the audience had invested over 35 episodes in. His death just felt so unnecessary, especially if they were going to have Eve see the light literally 10 minutes later. He had a wife and at least 2 other young kids besides Virgil, give the man his happy ending even if you wanted to write him off the show!
