That smile at the end from Gabrielle there seems out of character but I take it as “Well that’s over and done with, and I’ve got my wife back. Alls well that ends well.”
But then she takes a look at Xena and her face and she drops it. She drops smiling.
Because regardless of it being a victory, it was still a struggle for Xena. She acknowledged that. And I love that.

Xena and Gabrielle - Roleplay and Cosplay
Being heroes for the Greater Good and helping and saving the innocent can come to be a boring chore when you do it all day every day. You need to have some fun in the meanwhile. One of the things that made Xena and Gabrielle a great team was their skill of Roleplay and Cosplay. Their creative and unique costuming and accents greatly aided them when it came to fooling and manipulating the masses of villains and adversaries through Cosplay impersonation or fictional Roleplay. Dressing up and assuming the roles and positions of other people or making up their own characters, was their way of keeping their every day work life interesting, versatile and original so they didn’t get bored.
‘Vanishing Act’ immediately springs to mind when it comes to Roleplay. Xena had to promise to Autolucus, that if they wanted his help in getting the statue of Pax back, they would have to do it his way. So, they made up these characters, Ezra and Myopia, and made a plan where they would both bid for the statue as separate Fences to delay Tarsus from melting it down and selling it off. To keep it fun, for the both of them, while at work, they had this little competitive game of ‘who outbids who’ for possession of it even though it’s only pretend play.
‘Antony & Cleopatra’ immediately springs to mind when it comes to Cosplay. Xena assumes the role of Egypt’s ruler, Cleopatra, who recently died by assassination, to find out who her killer was and to stop Rome from entering The Ptolemaic Kingdom and gaining control of Cleopatra’s mighty naval fleet of warships on the Mediterranean sea. Gabrielle assumes the position of Senior Advisory, Eris, as her second in command, as it should be. To keep it fun, for Xena, she seduces Marc Antony to try and coerce him into taking it instead of Brutus or Octavius. Gabrielle is just left waiting in the wings and getting jealous at the sight of it. I presume this is how they kept their relationship exciting.
Roleplay and Cosplay was something they practiced day and night.

Actually, the actress that plays Cleopatra in this episode is not Gina Torres. It’s Josephine Davison. She also plays Artemis in ‘Motherhood’ and is white.

Gabby was incredibly jealous in this episode. And the subtext was nowhere near in the realm of subtle. A dinar for Gabrielle’s thoughts during that seduction montage scene. I don't know about her thoughts but her emotions are somewhere between horny and jealous. Gabrielle was stuck between pulling her away or joining in. That lip lick. I mean when does Xena ever kiss her like that? Tongue in the mouth and she's gone. 😏

I have to say, that middle stretch of season 5 is my least favourite portion of the entire series. The good news is, things really start to pick up again starting with this episode before the show gets back into its full swing a few episodes into season 6. :)
