This scene particularly stands out for me for the simple reason of how well Xena actually does know Gabrielle. I mean in a previous episode of season 5, 'Succession', Gabrielle questions her whether she really knows her now that she's become a whole new person. An evolved warrior. Whether Xena recognizes that and appreciates that. But this episode, and this scene, reestablished that she really does know her very well. And that's why she can respond so honestly "your heart" to Gabrielle. Because that is Gabrielle. She is heart-orientated. Her Queenship really does come from that. Of course Xena would be the one to remind her of that even after their fight. A truly beautiful scene. One that I think is overlooked among the countless. many other beautiful scenes between them because its a comedy and there's not really any deep concept going on other than them fighting over settling down together in the Amazon village. Gabrielle wants to so she can rule as Queen. Xena doesn't want to because she is bored out of her mind. And probably for other, much more controversial reasons. But the point is that they're not on the same wavelength with what they want in this episode, so this little scene is underrated. I think it's more significant to their relationship than people realize because it proves what Xena says in 'Succession'. "Gabrielle, I do see you. Sometimes I have trouble facing it but I promise you I will." She kept her promise.

I’m not an Amazon, Gabrielle.” It’s not that Xena wouldn’t do it because ‘Old Ares Had A Farm’ pretty much told us she’d want the quiet life eventually. It’s just that she didn’t want it to be with the Amazons. She’d never really feel like family with them while Gabrielle would. Especially because she’d have the constant guilt of almost wiping them out once upon a time ago all the time. But then there’s the added complication that Gabrielle won’t do it without Xena. Because what’s the point in settling down when you’re not with your partner? The whole point is for it to be a domestic married life. Something she originally ran away from. But now she’s found her soulmate, wouldn’t pass up in a heartbeat. The complications of this episode are really quite deep when you think about it even though it’s a comedy. I mean they almost broke up. And there is absolutely no way you can watch this episode and think “only friends”. It’s not written that way at all.

It makes Gabrielle reminisce on her first meeting with Xena and how she was so fascinated with her “many skills”, and eager to join up with her in her travels. She’s come a long way, and learned a lot of those many skills.
