Gabrielle - The true father of Xena’s baby, Eve.
I want to explain something that’s not often talked about with the Xenites. Or sometimes it is, but it’s viewed as more of a joke. Gabrielle being the father of Eve. I want to talk about this as a serious topic and give specific reasons as to why I believe she earned the role of being that second parent in Eve’s life.
Let’s start off with Gabrielle’s evolutionary process from the start of season 5. Her being anointed as an archangel in ‘Fallen Angel’. Her choosing to become a warrior to protect and defend Xena when she had lost her sense-of-self in ‘Chakram’. Her fighting for Xena and the baby’s life while she was pregnant in ‘Them Bones, Them Bones’. All the way to the climax in ‘Motherhood’, where Gabrielle is constantly battling against The Furies in her head to try to stop herself from killing Eve, as they were trying to coerce her to.
Throughout all of this, Gabrielle showed immense love, support, loyalty and dedication towards Xena, in making sure her and her baby made it through the ‘twilight of the gods’. Season 5 showcased her ability to put others first. Fighting against injustice and evil for them. It also showcased her insistence in fighting for the baby’s life. Including sacrificing her own life to bring the baby’s soul back when Alti stole it from Xena in ‘Them Bones, Them Bones’. Going through all that chaotic, bizarre, sharmaness shit. I mean really, the woman took on the role of a father in Eve’s life before she was even born, because she loved Xena selflessly and unconditionally. And knowing deep down that Eve was just as much hers as she was Xena’s. She truly was Xena and Gabrielle’s child.
Another reason I think she was so adamant on protecting Eve was because she felt she owed Xena for what happened to Solan. Feeling responsible for his death. Trying to make up for Xena’s loss by offering everything she could towards the birth of her new baby. A way to make the guilt of it all go away. It was a second chance at motherhood for Xena. But it was also a second chance for Gabrielle too because of the tragedy with her own daughter. The daughter of darkness, Hope, killed Xena’s first child, so Gabrielle killed her. They were both cruelly ripped from parenthood, so they both got a second chance at it again.
All these factors tie in together to explain exactly why Gabrielle is that second parent in Eve’s life and why she deserved to be. And yes, I would say she was more so a father than a mother to Eve. For her job wasn’t nursing the child. It was protecting it and it’s mother. As any father would do when their family is in danger. I believe Gabrielle takes on the role of the father, as she knows from her heteronormative upbringing that every child needs a father in their life . So that’s what she became. Eve’s father. And I’d like to believe Gabrielle and Eve developed that kind of relationship after Xena’s death.
There was an interesting headcanon theory a Xenite wrote on Tumblr once about how Gabrielle’s DNA could have been infused with Xena’s due to Ares putting them into one body in ‘Succession’. And honestly, as wacky as this show can be sometimes, you couldn’t dispute it easily as a plausibility that Eve could have even been Gabrielle’s daughter biologically too. Which would be absolutely hilarious because it would mean Ares made it possible for her to be!

‘Married With Fishsticks’ is one BIZZARE episode of Xena. It’s like you’re watching The Real Housewives Of New Jersey meets The Little Mermaid. Nutty as fuck. But I got the point of it. It was for Gabrielle’s “motherly” issues with Eve and obviously to cover up for Lucy’s pregnancy. It’s not as bad as another episode I could mention but still pretty ridiculous reguardless. I don’t mind it though.

I'm probably one of the few that love this episode - definitely NOT one of the worst episodes of the series in my opinion.
