We talk about the ship subtext between Xena and Gabrielle. What about the ship subtext between Athena and Ilainus. It’s a shame that the one God Xena had respect for results to this, but it is as they say. The Gods only ever look out for themselves. Athena wasn’t going to concede when she knew that child meant her demise. All the Gods are selfish like that. But it’s at least something that she ceased fire while tending to Illainus. Illainus might be human but because she had her favour, she’ll always protect her. It was the only thing they could count on. One woman’s love for another woman. Just like Xena and Gabrielle. The representation is that strong.
