Look. I realize that they couldn’t just read directly out of the ‘Tao Te Ching’, but some of these “readings” just don’t sound right at all. Did whoever made Lao Ma’s book even understand the Tao at all? I really don’t think they should have involved this.

2023-11-25 12:52:06 +0000 UTCThere was a kiss scene that Gabrielle was supposed to have with Lin Qi in the Season 5 episode ‘Back In The Bottle’. This scene was later cut, partly because Renée had told the producers that she had a problem with the romantic storyline they wrote between her and Lin Qi. And that she felt it was out of character for Gabrielle at that point in the show. Renee was always fighting for the authenticity of her character. I wonder why they even filmed the kiss in the first place if she felt that way. Oh well, least it never made the cut. I thought the character was quite wise and thoughtful so yeah, I wouldn’t have minded if he got a longer arc. But he was definitely not right for Gabby. Not just because I interpret her as gay but because he just isn’t her type. She likes the fiery warriors. The ones that have more energy and independence. He is too serious and looks like he would easily follow orders. Lucy and Renee had a lot more creative control over their characters and the storylines for them than you think. This show wasn’t done in the usual way. It was spontaneous and developed based on what was put into it in last minute moments - ad-libbing and free styling. So while there was always a script, things changed based on what Lucy and Renee wanted. They could make decisions that any actor in this day and age on a syndicated TV show couldn’t. They were very lucky.

Gabrielle expresses that settling down wasn’t something she really thought about because she felt she already had a home in Xena. Explaining that belonging had less to do with a place you live in, and more to do with the people inside it that live with you. But Xena and Gabrielle didn’t live anywhere. They were gypsies that travelled. Stopping in tavern inns, Amazon villages or friend’s houses every once in a while. But, ultimately, their home was each other. I liked Lin Chi even though he was just another guy that hit on Gabrielle to keep the network studio happy because they didn’t want her to be a lesbian. But I genuinely liked this one. He seemed to accept that Gabrielle belonged to someone else and was respectful of her wishes. He was deep and thoughtful and he spoke out about something that’s very important I thought. Bared his soul to her about why he felt he didn’t belong in the country he was living in. We’ll never feel like we belong in the world if we’re constantly at war with each other. If we just try to understand each other, or at least respect each other’s differences in policies and procedures, we’d do alright. ‘Cause that’s the only real issue we have. We do not understand each other, nor want to. Most of our issues, if not all, are ethical. Therefore, they could be solved if all parties in the argument agreed to disagree and put aside their stubborn beliefs just long enough to listen and to consider the other side’s opinions and philosophies. It’s funny and also sad how I can look back on a show that was made in the 90's and still find the themes they talked about and dealt with relevant and resonant today. Then again, that’s just the magic of Xena. It was ahead of its time in many ways. There’s so much substance in it that you never get in any TV show today. At least, I haven’t seen one that comes close to Xena in that. As campy and silly as it can be sometimes, it’s got so much heart and soul in it. “Xena, I’ll always love you, but I know I have to let you go. I always thought of you as my home, and when you left… I felt so lost.”
