Faithful, Too: “Game 59 W and Series W”

After a busy Saturday, we took it easy Sunday afternoon and didn’t miss a pitch of the first seven innings of the Cubs 7-3 victory over the Reds to remain red hot. Pun very much intended.

The Cubbies had a promising bottom of the first that they totally botched. Tucker got hit, Seiya walked, PCA singled…then Dansby struck out to end the threat. To add insult to injury was a real injury. In-between all that, Tucker faceplanted on a steal attempt and walk away with a cut nose as well as, as we found out later, a jammed finger. The training staff is hoping the team’s day off on Monday would be enough time for recovery. Guess it could have been worse, but he did have to leave the game before its conclusion.

Fortunately, Jamo had another solid outing, surrendering only two runs courtesy of an Elly de la Cruz homer in the top of the 6th (dedicated to his sister, who recently passed). He’s 5-3 on the short season and one of the reasons the team has weathered the months-long injury to Shota and season-ending injury to Steele. One day I’ll do a deep eval on the starters so far this season, but today isn’t that day. As I spoiled at the top (and in the title of this write-up), the Cubs won, but who won the “player of the game” is trickier.

Torn between Michael Busch and PCA. Here are their respective stats for the game:

Busch: 2-3, homer, single, 3 RBI’s, 1 run

PCA: 3-4, 3 singles, 1 RBI, 3 runs, 2 stolen bases

I’m gonna go Buschy, who was responsible for one of PCA’s runs. Another game, another hero.

Off to Washington for a three-game set against the Nationals, who are under .500 overall as well at home. The Cubs should win at least two and need to, especially considering where they’re headed this weekend: Philly, and that team is just behind the Cubs in the NL standings. Get those victories where you can…
