Faithful, Too: “Game 49W and Game 50W: Momma and The Blown-Save Redemption”

Last night I hopped in an Uber to go see Momma at Thalia Hall (with opener Wishy; check both of them out). The Cubs had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the 6th with the score tied at one. The following happened over the next 17 minutes:

Swanson RBI single
PCA RBI single
Nico 2-run single
Turner RBI sac-fly
Shaw RBI double
Suzuki 2-run homer

That’ll get things done, and done they were got. I found that the Cubs tacked on another five in the 9th and went on to win 14-1 (read in between Wishy and Momma sets. I’m not one of these monsters that goes on their phone throughout concerts). It was the bounceback game I hoped they’d get after that disastrous blown save the other night. As for that save, more on that…

…now! In today’s game in the bottom of the 9th with the Cubs leading 2-1 (literally all thanks to a Tucker homer in the 1st and single that the Marlins bobbled in the 8th), Daniel Palencia came to the mound. I was a little nervous. The young flamethrower flamed out two nights ago in that aforementioned blown save. Similar circumstances for today’s game. However, I get it. Throw the young ones back in the fire. Get them back on the horse. Restore their confidence.

Confidence restored. Kind of. Palencia gave up three, deep, deep, fly balls that were all caught and the Cubs won the game and the series. Palencia got the save. Those deep fly ball calls on the radio really do add to the drama.

Day off tomorrow then onto Cincy for their first meeting against the Reds. Let’s goooooo.
