With the wind blowing in today at Wrigley, home runs became pop outs, pop outs became doubles, and aside from a couple doubles by Nico (and a nifty play at the plate courtesy of PCA), the Cubs didn’t have it today. Final score 3-1. Not how I wanted to have my work day play out. Off to New York to play the Mets. Just the 4th best team in baseball after playing the Giants who are the 5th best team in baseball.
Despite losing their second home series in a row, I cannot stress how good this team has played when you take into consideration their schedule so far. Here are some #Gerberlytics profiling the top ten teams in all of baseball, how many games they’ve played against teams with an even record (.500) or a winning record (>.500), and their win/loss records against them.
Hmmm…what stands out?
1. Dodgers: 16 (9-7)
2. Padres: 19 (12-7)
3. Tigers: 19 (10-9)
4. Mets: 11 (7-4)
5. Giants: 21 (13-8)
6. Mariners: 18 (9-9)
7. Cubs: 34 (20-14)
8. Guardians: 12 (6-6)
9. Phillies: 16 (8-8)
10. Royals: 16 (4-12)
That’s right. The Cubs have played 34 games against average-to-great opponents while the team whose had the second-hardest schedule stands at 21: 13 fewer games. The Cubs have played more than twice as many tough teams as the best team in baseball (the Dodgers) and over three times more than the Mets. That is wild. They have only played one series against a sub-.500 teams and that was last week against the Pirates. I remain optimistic!
Off day tomorrow. Have a good one.
