From Cubs.com: “The nine runs plated in the 11th by the Giants set a Cubs franchise record for runs allowed in an extra-inning frame, according to team historian Ed Hartig. The previous record of seven was set in the 10th inning of a game on June 18, 1921 (also against the Giants). The nine-run defeat was also the largest extra-inning loss in Cubs history.”
That about sums it up. After watching an exciting comeback in the 9th, as well as the Cubs having a chance to outright end the game with runners in scoring position in that inning and the 10th, Ryan Pressly came in and pitched just about the worst inning a reliever has ever pitched. Cubs lost 14-5 in a strange blowout.
Pressly’s been injured over the past couple weeks. Counsell had an exhausted bullpen. He likely figured why bother having someone come in once the blowout was on. I’m not worried
For now.
Would be nice to have another series win clinched early, especially after Rea didn’t have it (been a while since I’ve said that). There’s always today. Brown has been notoriously hot and cold and I’m not thrilled about the Cubs facing off against Robbie Ray. But like the Skenes game last week, anything can happen. Will be listening today on the app at work. Go Cubs go…
