A day after watching a game with no volume, I listened to the Cubs sweep the A’s via the MLB app at work. Nothing makes the workday go by quicker than catching a few hours of a pounding (in sports, relax!). Cubs scored 35 runs in their three-game sweep and capped it off with another Suzuki showcase. He hit two more home runs after hitting one on Tuesday, and Taillon had a goodish bounceback game after getting shellacked in Arizona. He went six innings with 7 K’s, though it seems like he allowed multiple fellows to reach base every inning. Whatever. Take the win, Jameo. After all, good teams beat bad teams, and usually great teams sweep bad teams.
I remembered that both games in Japan were considered “home games” for the Cubs, who now lose two games at Wrigley Field as a result. Guessing that was a compromise with the league office to be allowed to compete against the new Evil Empire that is the Los Angeles Dodgers, a nickname that was attached to the Yankees since the late 1990’s. Hope we don’t look back in anger, as Noel Gallagher once wrote. Hope we have a champagne supernova, instead.
Speaking of: a toast! My player of the week is new Cubbie Kyle Tucker, who had ridiculous splits of .379 (hits per at-bats)/.500 (reached base per at bat, which is crazy)/1.431 (too complicated lol). He hit 4 home runs, knocked in 10 runs, and scored 10 times. It looked like a runaway for Tuck Temporary, though Suzuki’s Sacramento explosion made it quite close. Pitcher of the week goes to Porter Hodge, who is developing into quite the reliable set-up man. 3 games, 3 innings, 4 strikeouts, 3 hits, no runs. Matthew Boyd should have got that win on Sunday for the pitching award before the team collapse (no, I won’t let that go). Let’s hope the team can ride this momentum as they come home for the first time this weekend against the even-hotter San Diego Padres. May the weather be forever in their (the Cubs) favor.
