A text I received from a non-Cubs fan halfway through today’s eventual victory: “I like these Cubs powder blues with the cream pants!” Couldn’t agree more. These are my favorite alt uniforms the Cubs have had in my lifetime. They’ll be wearing them going forward in all Friday home games and I will absolutely be buying a jersey or hoodie or hat or something. Fantastic job by the organization on these.
And a fantastic job yet again by the Cubs pitching staff, holding the previously-scorching Padres to only one run for the second consecutive game in a 7-1 win. Watched the final six innings of this one at home after taking an extended walk/lunch/shop in 50-degree April weather in Chicago a.k.a. get-your-ass-outside weather. Vegetated alongside my partner as we finished up a cinnamon roll and almond croissant, topped off by back-up Cubbie catcher Carson Kelly’s three-run homer to clinch it late. Alliteration rules.
Newcomer Matthew Boyd went a scoreless six for what should have been his second victory of the season (remember that blown game against the Dbacks that I won’t let go?). His last batter faced lined a shot up the middle that bounced off his left shoulder…and fortuitously landed next to Nico who gently tossed it to first to end the inning. Breaths were held, but he appeared okay. I’d probably still be there crying on the mound.
Happy got a standing-o for playing in his 1,000th game. Later he had the catch of the year in left diving to his right. So happy he’s still here. Let’s get a sweep tomorrow. Go Cubs!
