It was an early night for me since I'm leaving early for the east this weekend, but I managed to catch the first four innings of the Cubs' (second) Opening Day before bedtime. This will be a recurring theme with games played out the west. While baseball games are considerably shorter than they used to be, sadly my waking life is, as well. Most of these games won't start 'til 10pm EST during my trip, but I'll be following along as best I can.
I digress. What a game. No duds on offense, with everyone but Dansby getting at least one hit. In addition, six players walked, six players scored, and four players knocked in at least a run. An incredibly well-rounded offensive effort led by Amaya who knocked in five. The great Kyle Tucker almost hit a home run on the first pitch he saw (flew out to the warning track), and in his next at-bat hit an RBI single on the, you guessed it, first pitch he saw. Looking forward to watching him this year.
The pitching, on the other hand, wasn't so great. Steele is off to a slow start. He got the win because of the team's offense and an incredible Dansby double play (YouTube those last three words for a true highlight), but gave up in six hits and three runs in only five innings. Luckily, he has about 30 more games to start and make up for it. The best performance out of the pen was youngster Porter Hodge, who had two strikeouts in an inning pitched. He was great in his first season last year, so hopefully establishing himself as a solid set-up man will be a driving force in the season to come.
Expect shorter updates during my vacation. Would love for the Cubs to split the four game series, and who knows? Maybe 3-1? Maybe a sweep? Hope springs eternal (and I'm not talking about Shawshank).
Let's go.
