True story: the reference to Sam and Shelob in Danse Macabre is what made me pick up and read Lord of the Rings trilogy. Love the dark tower detours so much!

2024-07-31 19:16:40 +0000 UTCHaving studied a lot of The History of Middle-earth volumes that detail the composition of Lord of the Rings, while Tolkien had worked out a lot of history and geography beforehand, he actually did make up a lot of the story as he went along and whenever he did plan ahead, often changed quite a bit when he actually got to those parts. He originally thought he was already over halfway through when he first got to Rivendell, and Faramir existing at all was a total surprise to Tolkien when he got to those chapters, and Aragorn was originally a Hobbit named Trotter (because he wore wooden shoes), which he remained for a long time before massive re-writing partway through.
