This episode is a bit too campy for my taste so it’s not my favourite season opener. If you’re not familiar with the Dracula story, Xander represents a character called Renfield. He was the inmate of a lunatic asylum who fell under Dracula’s spell and started eating flies. He then fed them to spiders and then fed the spiders to a bird which he also ate.
