Team Beef Next VR Project Results

The vote for Team Beef's next VR project is now closed. We want to thank those who participated. In the end we had roughly a 33% turn out for the vote, but still think we have a reasonably good grasp of what our patrons want to see from us.

Plans

By an overwhelming percentage it is clear that 3 games are most wanted, Morrowind (OpenMW), Quake 4 and Battefront 2. We are actually going to do the first step of a VR port on all 3 projects. This includes ensuring we are clear to work on the project and everything is suitable for VR.

OpenMW

In the case of OpenMW we will be reaching out to their team to announce our intentions and found out more about what is being worked on. We are aware that there is a current PCVR branch that is slowly being merged into the main thread and an Android build that was abandoned last November. The VR branch obviously has some overlap to what we are doing. We need to ensure there is not already a standalone VR release planned so we are not stepping on the main team's toes. Additionally we want to double check the 'agreement' they have with Bethesda to ensure a standalone VR port is not going to get the project as a whole, or us, in hot water.

Quake 4

Quake 4 is somewhat of any easy win, with a difficulty rating of A, so we will be bringing this across into our Doom3Quest code soon and getting this released. We know that OpenMW got the most votes, but believe its completely doable to get this in and in a playable state whilst we hopefully work things out with the OpenMW team.

Battlefront 2

Since this is a bit of an odyssey, being a Unity project using the original game assets, the first step is to get our in-house tester-extraordinar Bummser, to appraise the current state in pancake mode, and see how complete and playable it is, especially in regards to multi-player (the heart of Battlefront).  This work can be done whilst we are looking at other projects and prepared for future porting.

Native / PCVR

We are aware that the Patreon has both PCVR and standalone VR players and although there is some overlap of players with Quest / Pico and a good VR PC, people are excluded depending on the project choices we make. In the current one PCVR has taken a bit of a backseat (although Battlefront 2 if suitable would be playable on PCVR from the outset) but we wanted to assure our PCVR patrons that you haven't been overlooked. We are aware that a significant percent of people would like to see JKQuest for PCVR. This will be considered once the game is stable and released. Once one PCVR version of our ports is done in paves the way for more, so we'd like to do this sooner than later.

I also wouldn't be surprised if one of the Unity suggestions pops up sooner or later.

Other Notes

We have retired the following games from our future possibilities Trello page due to the very low interest and difficulty rating:

Forsaken

Tribes

Warzone 2100

Spring RTS Engine

For battlefront 2 if the original master list goes down, there are always OpenSpy master servers the community has made.

Jake Hodgson

If anyone hasn't seen Morrowind in VR you can check it out in the link below on my Youtube channel. There's a link to OpenMW-VR there too which will get it working in PC VR. I got the game on Steam and it wasn't hard to get the VR mod working if you don't require standalone play. I must say the scenery of the game is gorgeous and I think OpenMW helps a lot with making it so pretty in 2023. If the upcoming standalone ports are anywhere close to it we're in for a treat. The little bit of combat I tried was a little weird so I hope that is something that gets tweaked in the Team Beef port. I've been meaning to experiment with adding graphical mods but haven't got around to it. It's not quite as easy as Wabbajack and takes a lot of time. Maybe one day.
