OpenXR FTW Baby! - Pico 4 now supported!!

Hello Patrons

So this is something of a landmark development release as now Pico owners can enjoy JK2 Jedi Outcast in VR as well thanks to making the switch to using OpenXR instead of the legacy (and deprecated) Oculus Mobile SDK (also known as VrApi). Somewhat ironically a switch that wouldn't have occured quite so soon had I (DrBeef) not been locked out of developer mode on my Quest for several days with nothing better to do! Significant thanks are also owed to Discord user and fellow modder/developer Lubos Ivonasek (whom you might know from the PPSSPP VR port of the PSP emulator for the Quest) who was responsible for the first port of Quake3Quest to OpenXR and subsequently to the Pico Neo/4. The existence of that pre-existing code made the task one hell of a lot simpler!

For now this port is still called "JKQuest", though this could change in the future (since it's now not just for the Quest!)

The Quest build (which shares the codebase with the Pico build) is now also running on OpenXR which should make it future proof should VrApi Apps stop working on future devices.

What else?

------------

There are a couple of bug fixes in there too, you should find the gesture "use" is now far more tuned and easier to use and will no longer prematurely exit from things like security cameras and emplaced guns. The game should now also load the last save when you die. Thanks to MuadDib for those changes.

As this is still in-development and this release is a fairly significant change, please do report any bugs you find, there's a good chance that some things might now not work quite as they did before. The engine code hasn't changed however, so fundamentally the game should play exactly as it did before, but anything is possible.

I'll wrap this up here, so to all our patrons thank-you!, and to all new Pico 4 owning patrons who have joined to see what the fuss is about before this eventually goes to a public release, welcome, we hope you enjoy the port!

Thanks

-DrBeef

For anyone new, you might need these instructions:

Setup

--------

In order to play this you will need to own the full version of Jedi Knight: Outcast (we would be amazed if any of you don't at this stage!, if not, then please buy it on Steam or another reputable platform). Once you have developer mode enabled on the device the installation is pretty much the same.

Installation on the Pico 4

------------------------------

Ensure developer mode is enabled on the pico: https://www.picoxr.com/us/faq_details.html?faq=dev

To install, download the APK on this post to your computer. Connect the Pico4 via USB and open SideQuest (Advanced Installer). Drag the APK onto Sidequest whilst in the Tasks menu (or select the APK from within Sidequest).

JKQuest should appear in the "unknown" tab on the left hand side of your Pico app library.

Run the app once on the Pico 4 and it will create the necessary folders. You then need to copy the full game PK3 files from your PC install (assets0.pk3, assets1.pk3, assets2.pk3, assets5.pk3) to:

/JKQuest/JK2/base on your Pico 4.

Installation on the Quest

----------------------------

This article is extremely helpful regarding the process of enabling developer mode on your Quest:

https://uploadvr.com/sideloading-quest-how-to/

and this is a very detailed and helpful video which should walk you through the entire process of installation and get you up and running:

(only one small note is you don't have to be connected via link. Just being connected via USB is enough).
