I actually ran for mayor of my small town when I was 19. I didn’t win (3rd place lol), so it actually is possible to be mayor that young.

Michael Sessions became mayor of Hillsdale Michigan in 2005. Ben Wyatt is partly based on this story, considering they both were mayors of small Midwest towns. Sessions didn't resign in disgrace though, he simply didn't seek reelection and never moved on in politics.
