If I remember correctly, the showrunners also noticed the chemistry between Peter and Claire but due to the character's age difference no one understandably wanted to go there. That's why they tried to put the pin back into the grenade by making them niece and uncle. When Missi Pyle's character (she was in Galaxy Quest one of the aliens, the girl who fell in love with Monk) punched out Hiro, she called him "Sulu". Technically, he's the son of Sulu.
