"How did Samaritan convince the boy to do what he was doing?"|| There are lots of animals on this planet that are stronger than us, faster than us, have more stamina and better reflexes and every other quality you could name. The only thing that has led human beings to dominate the world, such that what we want determines what life is like for all other creatures, is that we are smarter than them. We get to decide, for example, whether elephants get to survive as a species, or go extinct, or live exclusively in zoos. Well, the intelligence gap between us and a superintelligent AI would be quite a lot more than the gap between us and the elephants. If someone builds it, it will get to decide what happens to us. Coercing a child to serve as its mouthpiece is trivial. Samaritan is, effectively, a God. A superintelligent artificial intelligence could, even if it were no smarter than a normal human, do the intellectual work of 20,000 human years in a week, simply by virtue of the fact that silicon circuits process information more quickly than what is between your ears. Samaritan is clearly much smarter than that. Faced with an entity like that, with cognitive powers so far beyond ours that we can't even come close to understanding what it would be able to do what it can do, do you really think that a ten-year-old, even a prodigy, could stand up to it? It would have little difficulty finding a child intelligent enough for its purposes, but with whatever psychology it required to have the kid buy in fully to what it was after. Maybe he's a young egotistical psychopath. Maybe it has convinced him that if he doesn't submit, his sister will die. Maybe it has him convinced that it is his imaginary friend, and if he helps it, good things will come to him and his family. There are a thousand ways that a being like that could convince anyone it wishes to do anything it wants.

2020-07-21 15:25:46 +0000 UTCThe conversation between the kid and Root was amazing!! I don't know what cliche that guy before is on about. For me it was amazing because it proves how good Samaritan is at brainwashing people, especially young people who can be influenced more easily. It also serves as a point to the machine where Samaritan believes the children are the future (or the shape of things to come as Greer puts it). The psychological game played this entire episode was fantastic as well as the conversations, no one seems to give this TV Show credit for its conversations which are top notch every episode.

2020-07-21 04:03:19 +0000 UTC2 things: Like the girl in the Nautilus game, the kid was recruited by Samaritan and bought into it's purpose. Considering he was smart enough to hack into the government, it makes sense that Samaritan would take an interest. When Greer is saying he isn't going to be the stand in for Samaritan, he mentions that it has somebody else in mind, another asset. The ear piece signals that Samaritan is in his ear like the Machine is in Root's. As for Greer, he realized that the powers that be get to decide where it's pawns go and where they go. He no longer wanted to be a part of that game and wanted to eliminate the purpose of marionettes like his boss.

2020-07-21 03:33:17 +0000 UTCI was gonna give this episode a 10, but honestly, the Greer flashbacks were pretty "meh" to me and I still think the choice to make Samaritan's avatar a child is cringey. I get what they were going for, but it's still such a cliché cringey choice :D
