Kingpin and the Punisher were the combo I never knew I needed 'til this episode. And to address one of your points of confusion - I could be wrong as those earlier episodes didn't hold my attention too well, but I think those guys at the beginning of this arc that Matt and Elektra took down with ease were Yakuza, who just had TIES to The Hand. These guys are definitely The Hand, though, and they're a whole other can o' worms.
