Gabe's father (an actor by the way you'll soon meet on Psych and have a lovely love-hate relationship with) was incredibly embarrassed because he was sucked into a relatively common scam in India where they get the wealthy white man to pay for life "wisdom" and taking advantage of stereotypes that England placed upon them and Western Media continues to spew. He felt compelled to make up the story about being a fighter pilot to save face. He did not know he had contracted leprosy and passed it off to his son. He genuinely thought he just had carpal tunnel.
