The phrase you are looking for is Dark Comedy. Which is a favorite genre of mine. I think that when James saw the photos and video of actual murders that he realized that he wasn't actually meant to be a killer, but ironically he then has to kill in self defense (or defense of another), which is an interesting turn of events. Loving the reactions to this show. If you want to keep reacting to kind of "different" teen comedies after this, you may want to consider Sex Education on Netflix. Not as dark, but definitely quirky.
