Random? Which of These Would My Mom Enjoy More?

This is a random question that I didn’t know who to ask so I figured I’d bring it up here.

so my mother is in her 50s and most of her life has only really ever watched Novelas(Soap Operas). She asked me today what shows are out there that she might enjoy that are different than what she watches. I didn’t know what to say and said I would get back to her.

So I wanted to see which of these shows would be most enjoyable for someone in their 50s who dosnt really know much about modern TV beyond daytime television?

Which Do I Tell Her To Watch?

Also Should I Record Her Reaction To The Pilot? Would that be interesting or funny for YouTube or here?

This is Us is good. I also feel that Once Upon A Time could be an option - to me it is a lot like a soap opera, complete with plot lines such as "my best friend/ roommate is actually my mother".

This is us is AMAZING!

PamPam and her PamPams

I think, given your mum is into telenovellas, Lost might be a nice bridge into something more out there - it has something of the soap opera about it at times, and has a nicely heightened sensibility.

This is us !! I would love to see you and your mom react to it !

Marie

Outlander ! My Mom loved it, it's a really great show and I think it would be a good choice for yours. My mom also likes Lucifer a lot, it's enjoyable to watch ^^ For Comedy : The Good Place is great and different from others sitcom

Reanisu

The Good Place isn't gory and could genuinely make someone like your mother both laugh a lot and engage in the show. I personally didn't enjoy it but could see how others would.

The Good Place is great unless your mom is very religious and it might offend her.

Allan Cornett

I’m also on team Grey’s Anatomy but you have great choices up there! This is Us is lovely.

Janeka Rector

La Casa de Papel. It's on Netflix. It's enjoyable even for english only people who would have to read the subtitles, but for someone coming from telenovelas, it's a no brainer, she'll really like it.

DougRaw

This Is Us is definitely the safe/obvious choice. It's emotional, full of sad and feel-good family relationships/drama, and tons of characters to root for. If she likes a lot of drama and crazy twists, though - given the soaps - HTGAWM could also be good.

electricroad

I was wondering about that, too. I was thinking of Game of Thrones, but those last two seasons...woof.

Rachael

If you want to introduce her to something modern, maybe Breaking Bad. It was the first new show I introduced my dad (60s) to, and now all he watches are prestige dramas and HBO shows. And The Good Place and Brooklyn Nine-Nine for comedy.

Rachael

Definitely Outlander! 👍🏽😄

Other Boy Reactions

My mum is in her 60's and only watches soaps and reality shows. However, I managed to talk her into watching Game of Thrones. She hates fantasy, but once she'd overcome the gore and nudity (watching some of the sexual scenes with my mum were downright embarrassing), she loved the show.

Mandzipop

The Good Place. People that I never expected to watch a sitcom have watched that show and loved it... it seems to attract people from ever demo.

Lost, for sure. It has the soapy element, it's a blend of different genres (medical, con artist, K-drama, survivor, etc.) plus a mystery box show that emphasizes the characters. I watched some of American Mum's reactions -- she's an older lady too -- and she was absolutely adorable. And of course you should record her reaction. You're asking people who pay to watch reactions that question? 😉 A Buffy podcast just posted a clip of one of their listener's mom reacting to a certain scene you haven't seen yet, and it was hilarious. I was not expecting those words to come out her mouth, lol.

Rachael

This is Us has the emotional drama and revelations of a soap, with the back-and-forth twist with the past and present.

Sam

the good place would be a great start. . . lost is obviously a great show, and it does have a soapish feel to it alot of the time. . and i dont know many people who didnt enjoy this is us

NWar086

Such a good show. T.T all the time. :-P

Shaggit

Are you doing a Mom reaction ? This is Us, please ! I'm ready to re-watch but I don't feel like re-watching alone :-)

Christine

My Mom was similar with the soaps and she likes the USA network shows (Monk, Psych, Suits, etc). But The Good Place and How To Get Away With Murder sound good too.

Cindy Lou

As someone in their 60s I think you should take her out of her comfort zone. I would love to see a reaction on Pateron. Personally I am a life long horror fan, but my son can't take it. Maybe she would react to a movie with you.

Brenda Lewis

Outlander! It's one of very few shows out there that I think all generations can enjoy. I'm in my 20s and love the series, and my Mum also loves it. It's incredibly well written.

NicoleD

My Aunt who is in her 70s LOVES cop shows and Medical Dramas like "How to Get away with Murder" or even "House"....and my Mom in her 60s is in to Comedies and BBC Cop Shows like "The Goldbergs" or "Midsummer Murders"

Sarah Trow

Honestly if she is into soaps This is Us is the best for her. Of everything listed that show fits best.

Shaggit

How about Grey’s Anatomy or Chicago Fire? They are kinda’ soap opera-y.

Lostmyshoe22

Outlander!

Ninaofthe90s

How does she feel about violence and nudity?

Mark Wood

I think Outlander will be the best for your Mom, from what you described she likes.

Scarlett Monrow

I think This is Us would be the right choice for her.

Stephanie Bedworth

Here's a random segestion, Outlander I think she might like that show. My mom does.

Brad turner

Lost for sure; please record it!

Kristin Carter

That is the only modern show that I know she has watched. Because it was a Spanish telenovela that she enjoyed and when it got made in English she watched it with my aunt.

Steven Merced

i think the good place is a good choice. my mother likes Gilmore Girls, and Veronica mars most of the shows I watch!

Mariella Nilsson

Having your mother do a reaction to a pilot would be awesome!

Mariella Nilsson

Just suggested Outlander to my own Mom and she absolutely loved it. She also ended up annoying Charmed and Gilmore Girls

Georgia M

Stranger Things for that 80s throwback
