This show is like the film The Outsiders in the number of future-famous actors that appear. I think you noticed Simon Pegg, but also look in the background for Jamie Bamber (Apollo on BSG) and others in future episodes. Oh, and FYI, rank hierarchy in the Army is private then sergeant (aka “non-com” for non-commissioned officer), who are pivotal to the running of the unit. Non-coms basically are the immediate supervisors of each squad and allow the 2nd lieutenants to run the unit effectively. Having all of the sergeants threaten resignation at once was a demonstration of complete breakdown in unit cohesion and finally alerted the top brass that Sobel was dangerously unfit to lead Easy Company.

2019-12-14 22:30:12 +0000 UTCPrivate James Ryan landed with the 101st Airborne in Normandy. That's why he was so far inland when Tom Hank's squad was ordered to bring him home. The paratroopers were sent in there (among other important jobs) to ensure that the Germans wouldn't detonate important bridges which would seriously impede the invasion. I'm also not sure that the "last brother" was an actual rule because in the movie it just seemed like a decision that the General made after learning that three out of four brother died within a week.

And Winters was promoted to 1st Lt. I've been watching JAG for a decade and because all these ranks used to confuse me too, I just made me a chart for all the ranks in all the branches. E company was one company of the 2nd Battalion, of the 506th Regiment, of the 101st Airborne Division. In the episode, we saw Dick Winters promoted from 2nd. Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant, assuming command of the 2nd Platoon of E Company. The typical structure of units is a squad of about 10 men, as part of a platoon of 3 squads, a company (like E Company) consisting of 3 or 4 platoons, a battalion (the 2nd) of 3 companies, a regiment (the 506th) of three battalions, several regiments to a division (the 101st Airborne Division.) I hope this helps make it easier to follow the story.

Also, the character names are all real people and not changed. You can look them up on Wikipedia but that sort-of runs the risk of spoilers. E Company was part of about 20,000 British, Canadian, and American airborne troops who parachuted behind German lines in the pre-dawn hours of D-Day to take key German positions and prevent the Germans from reinforcing the beaches (their objectives were described in the briefing scene near the end.)

Stephen Ambrose was the best-selling historian who wrote the book which the series is based upon. It is a history of Easy Company during the war. Ambrose was not in Easy company but he interviewed most of the survivors.
