This episode is just plain fun. It is written by Tim Minear, the one guy who can write a better Angel episode than Joss Whedon himself. When you see his name, you are almost always guaranteed a great episode.

To me this was the first episode of the show that showed it has the comedic chops to be as funny as buffy... without using a cameo from spike. Imagine how much fun it must've been for Kate and Angel's actors too. Kate's part is a dream gig, she got to go through every emotion... pulled it off well too.

I feel like Buffy had several funny characters, and that’s why the writers focused on the more serious brooding aspect of the character. He was also a love interest, and was written that way opposite Buffy. I love this episode so much! That scene where Angel says he feels judged when he changes his face is one of my favorites ever. I laugh every time. Herb Saunders is a classic.

The title is a play on Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility.” It's silly, but just like SMG on Buffy, I love it when DB gets to do comedy because DB is such a goof. It does (lightly) touch on some serious issues like police brutality and all the masculinity / boys club issues with the police. Both Kate and Angel have similar issues with their emotional protectiveness and how they treat other people, and it hints at shared parental issues. It does further the overall narrative by making Wolfram & Hart an active player and taking more notice of Angel. And I agree, Lee is super creepy. I never get tired of DB’s delivery of, “Painbow,” with the little dip and air quotes. Super Sensitive!Angel is the second best Angel, after Herb Saunders!Angel. Re: the ending, Tim Minear (watch out for his writing — he does some of the best Angel episodes) said it was Joss’s idea: “Joss’s idea was that the father comes in and hasn’t changed as a result of what happened. Nothing has changed. I think that really worked for the fans, too. The way I wrote it was that he would walk up and there would be this big TV ending where they hug, and instead he just says, ‘Don’t ever mention it again,’ and he turns around and walks away. If it had gone the other way, I think the whole thing would have collapsed. That’s really Joss knowing best.”
