2020-05-10 22:37:57 +0000 UTCThe tattoo denotes Master Airbender. Aang had it because he became a master airbender at an early age, not because he was the Avatar. In flashbacks we always saw the older airbenders with those tattoos. So this just means Tenzin is a master. He's 51 in Book 1. I can see you being confused because the Tattoo would light up when he went into avatar state, not sure if that has an explanation. Anyway yeah, Tenzin's family are the only 4 air benders in existence which is why Korra is yet to have learned it. She only knows the other 3, and nothing of the spiritual aspect of being the Avatar. (The monks and airbending in general are much more spirit driven so Aang was naturally inclined to excel in that part of his journey)
