The flashbacks aren't a masterpiece, but the reason they stood out even more to you is because it was kind of like them dipping their feet in the water, it was kind of like an introduction to the flashbacks but still very incomplete. That's why they feel like they didn't add much of anything to the episode, it's unfinished. We'll be getting chunks throughout the season.

Without spoilers since I don't remember every single detail about the show (up to the end of season 4 at least for me) I will say yes, most of your questions about things not "making sense" now will make sense later. Again, without being specific ;)

The vampire lore is one of the only things I think this show does better than Buffy. It’s interesting and one of the best aspects of the show. The rest can’t compare. The show gets really interesting and more entertaining after this. As someone who does not care about the love triangle at all, there are other awesome things coming in the future that have no romance. I liked that Elena’s reaction to Stefan being a vampire was to get away from him. She had an appropriate reaction to all of it. I’m glad they didn’t go the twilight route and have her fawn over him.

The lore is a strong part of this show. Out of the vampire shows I've seen, this is by far the strongest. The flashbacks are significant, they might not feel it yet, but there are more to come and they are essential to the plot. A significant part of the story is the relationship between the brothers. When we first met Damon he said he'd promised Stefan and eternity of misery. There is a reason for that and the flashbacks go into all of this. Hearing it simply being told by Stefan is giving the audience a one-sided story. As you can see, they were close before they turned. Also you find out Damon was a soldier in the civil war. The flashbacks build up a picture of what they were like as humans. It helps explain why they are like they are. You can't uninvite a vampire in. To do that you either move house of die. A witch can put a barrier spell up, but they are only temporary, can't say why as that is a spoiler. The cheesy episodes are over now. We're starting to get more into the story. The first few episodes are a lesson in vampire mythology. The music does get better, although you might have to wait a bit for that to happen.

Yeah the first episodes are kinda cheesy and awkward. But it gets better from now on I think, we’re getting past the cheesy part now 😊

I think the first episodes are a little bit cheesy but that okay, it will get better. The storyline like you will see doesn't concentrate on the drama love only, there are deeper mysteries ties to every character and we will be able to discover it.
