2020 Easy Allies Patron Game of the Year
Added 2021-01-24 22:35:10 +0000 UTCThank you to everyone who submitted your picks last week. We've collected nearly 900 submissions and it's come down to this top ten. Well, there was a tie for the 10th spot, so we made the decision to expand the nominee list to 11 to accommodate the situation.
You can now vote in the poll below. We'll award the Patron GOTY as part of our Personal Picks stream following the EZA awards this Tuesday at 6pm PT on twitch.tv/easyallies

OMG I was so late to this but I knew my fellow patrons would do whats right, since no one else did.

2021-01-29 15:04:23 +0000 UTCI voted for Ghost of Tsushima out of this list but Nioh 2 was my GOTY of last year.

2021-01-27 02:06:31 +0000 UTCWith these many comments i dont if this will be seen or if it's the right place to put it but please PLEASE put the deliberations on the audio feed. At 8 hours, overcast speeds up podcasts in general plus skips silences making podcasts much faster to get through. Can't wait to hear them 😄

2021-01-26 22:55:10 +0000 UTCI’m happy if FF VII Remake wins because FF VII is my favourite game of all time and I love the Remake, but like I said in the previous Submissions post, my pick is The Last of Us Part II. I believe this game did something in the narrative department together with the character interactions that it hasn’t be done before, at least at this scale. This and the fact that is almost perfect in every other department. I don’t think it right when people say that they don’t vote on TLOUII because it’s a depressing story. That means that any Horror game will never be a GOTY because of it, for example. Being depressing doesn’t mean it can´t possibly represent something that happens in the society and that contains some message that makes you reflect about it, and take that as a positive. And there are a few sweet moments in the game too.

2021-01-26 18:00:03 +0000 UTCBeing able to change your vote doesn't seem like a good way to go about this.

2021-01-26 03:24:39 +0000 UTCI played none of those games. I feel like I missed a lot in 2020. Too much choice. I can't vote based on other people opinion.

2021-01-26 00:23:12 +0000 UTCI am only 7 hours in 13 Sentinels and it is the clear GOTY. The most original out of any of these games for sure. However, I loved my time with most of them.
Nick Sossi
2021-01-26 00:18:08 +0000 UTCI loved it, but it's a hard sell.

Ian Barker
2021-01-25 22:09:26 +0000 UTCLast of Us 2 for me. In terms of overall quality and the feeling like this is the benchmark that all games should be striving for - production, voice acting, animation and sound - it is in my view ahead of the rest. HL Alxy might be those things as well, but I can't say I've played it.

2021-01-25 21:00:28 +0000 UTCvote with you heart allies !

2021-01-25 18:58:34 +0000 UTCThere's no mistaking that this is an Easy Allies GOTY list because there's a good chunk of Ben's favourites in there. The Tony Hawk Pro Skater remakes omission hurts and of course Huntdown not being there is a damper-but of course majority rules.
James Davie
2021-01-25 18:51:09 +0000 UTCI agree, Mr. Leitner.. My personal favorite is Ori and the Will of the Wisps (from these); my actual favorite would be Spelunky 2, I'm sad it didn't make it to the top eleven but I guess I can't argue much against all of these (except maybe for 13 Sentinels but what do I know)
Dano
2021-01-25 18:49:32 +0000 UTCPolls like these are always sad. It very quickly becomes 'which of these options that are likely to possibly win would I rather vote for' and not 'which of these do I believe are the best regardless of likelihood of winning'
John Leitner
2021-01-25 18:16:24 +0000 UTCHalf Life Alyx is a sad case. It would unequivocally be number one if there wasn't so much friction when it came to actually being able to play it. When VR is more accessible/ubiquitous it'll likely have a resurgence in discussion.
Frisket
2021-01-25 17:17:19 +0000 UTCI'm sad that I've only played 3 of these: Ori and the Will of the Wisps, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. Ori is my favorite, followed by Ghost and then TLOU. I will play Doom soon, and I bet the pressure to play Hades will make me give in even though I HATE even the basic premise of roguelikes. The rest will probably just sit on my backlog for years or the rest of my life. None of them hold a candle to The Outer Wilds
gruntelite
2021-01-25 16:43:20 +0000 UTCDidn't think Doom Eternal had much of a chance anyway, but it's really upsetting to see it poll this low.
Msap
2021-01-25 16:42:40 +0000 UTCGhost of Tsushima was my pick. They managed to create a better Assassin's Creed than Ubisoft on their first try. Highly impressive how amazing the game turned out . I LOVED soaking in the Feudal Japan vibes and the combat was absolutely top tier. Lastly the graphics were amazing and it fools you into thinking Ghost of Tsushima is a nextgen game.
Casper Andersen
2021-01-25 16:04:43 +0000 UTChow are there not more votes on ACNH? easy the goty
2021-01-25 15:18:19 +0000 UTCI want it to be FF7remake but my gut says TLOU2, based on my own feelings playing through both games. So I have to be honest and vote TLOU2 but if FF7remake gets it, I'm perfectly happy. Personal honorable mention goes to 13 sentinels. That game just pulled me in so easily and kept me playing.
LukeW
2021-01-25 14:33:42 +0000 UTCIn terms of overall "quality", not a lot of things can beat Hades. There aren't many faults to it. To me, it's my GOTY easily (haven't played TLoU2 yet). But, GOTY isn't necessarily about the best quality game as enjoyment isn't necessarily correlated to overall quality. For that reason, I totally get why FFVII might win this one. I'm not a super FF fan, but I had quite a bit of fun with FFVII.
flipper_gv
2021-01-25 14:31:46 +0000 UTCI knew there was no chance a game I liked would make it even into the top 3 lol.

2021-01-25 14:17:08 +0000 UTCI see ff7s lead being attributed too nostalgia. But for myself and I think many it’s the wow factor this game has. so many wow moments that just entertain you. It may be shorter then most on this list but frankly there is too many games too play so I’ll happily play a not so marathon game
Matthew Palling
2021-01-25 13:15:31 +0000 UTCIt's quite distracting to see the percentages before voting, urge to gang up must be great... Altho, as it is at the time of this post, seems good to me...

2021-01-25 12:43:14 +0000 UTCDidn't really play much at all that came out last year. It was mostly just Animal Crossing. In fact, that might have been the only game I played that came out last year.... SO I'm voting for that. xD Shout out to A Short Hike though. It came out the year before, but I only played it last year. It's a wondrful game and my personal game of the year.
MarziiBarks
2021-01-25 12:42:28 +0000 UTCff7 was good but I felt disappointed as it ended just when the original game got into gear and became awesome. so as it's barely 10% of a story it's not enough for me on its own. tlou2, Hades, alyx, 13 sentinels are all above ff7R for me even though ff7 is my favourite game of all time together with Bloodborne. I will reserve judgement until we have the full story in 15 years...

2021-01-25 11:29:09 +0000 UTCMan, I didn't think Eternal would win, but it hurts to see it *this* low.

2021-01-25 08:48:45 +0000 UTCLooks like it'll go to FFVII. I'll admit, I was soured on the experience by the game's final act, and looking back on it that kind of allowed me to see some other parts of its design I didn't agree with - particularly a lot of filler. Clearly it resonated with a lot of people though, so I'll just take my Hades and go pout in the corner. Still, despite being an absolutely garbage year in basically every other respect, it was a really strong one for games.
Sasquatch
2021-01-25 08:09:16 +0000 UTCIt has to be final fantasy 7 remake. A game that delivered above expectations despite being eagerly anticipated for over a decade.

2021-01-25 06:47:44 +0000 UTCThis is the reason studio's push for endless reboots, remakes and don't risk new IPs. Nostalgia sells and it sells easy with little risk
Marcel "Giru017" Frohlich
2021-01-25 06:46:29 +0000 UTCA bit bummed Astros Playroom didn't make it, so I had to vote for my personal 2nd place GotY: Ghost of Tsushima
Sebastian Erben
2021-01-25 06:45:01 +0000 UTCYakuza 7 went down to %2 :( Might be time to abandon ship and jump to FF7R since that has a chance of winning this.
2021-01-25 06:31:34 +0000 UTCThe game that would identify the year 2020 would most certainly be Animal Crossing but my GOTY would be Ori. The game design from music and story to art style and level designs are top notch. I've played it on the pc after the bugs were fixed so I may have had different experience and then again on switch for a second time. Both experience is a 10/10
Aron Joshua
2021-01-25 04:51:03 +0000 UTCI voted FF7R. I am a huge fan of the original so of course nostalgia plays a role, but I really think it did an exceptional job in building it's world, telling it's story, and updating the turn-based combat into a more action-orientated visual style. Last of Us Part II was an amazing game as well, but I think the depressing story is a big reason that I don't want to vote for it. As soon as I finished it, I just wanted to get away from that world and those characters. It basically did too good a job at what it was going for. I can totally understand why it's a lot of people's GOTY, but FF7 just left me with an excitement for replaying it in the future and anticipating what's to come.
Ian Alexander
2021-01-25 04:47:09 +0000 UTCLooks like FF7 will get it and it was an amazing game with the years best soundtrack. But it was no Last Of Us. That game is special but I guess nostalgia plays a large part as well as I guess some people not liking certain aspects of a game, for which it is a lot more divisive than any other game
Jaan Ibrahim
2021-01-25 04:27:27 +0000 UTCIf you want to see the effects of nostalgia, take a look at this poll.

2021-01-25 04:04:27 +0000 UTCHades is my personal GOTY, easily. The attention to detail and level of polish on every part of the game is wild. I don't usually play many roguelikes, but Hades' loop of gameplay/story drew me in immediately. Each character is fun to talk to and all of the art, voiceover, and music is top-notch. The difficulty/Heat system is also very cool and much more interesting than the standard "easy / normal / hard" difficulty settings on most games.

2021-01-25 03:59:52 +0000 UTCFFVII:RE surpassed all my expectations and was a game I'd been looking forward to since the PS 3 tech demo. So many games on this list are deserving, but FFVII made me feel like I was 11 again playing at my parents' house. Hades, Doom Eternal, and TLOU II are all games I enjoyed immensely and in any other year would by strong GOTY contenders, but none of them brought joy to me the way Final Fantasy VII: Remake did.
Rinder86
2021-01-25 03:17:55 +0000 UTCI hate to admit that I'm also ok with FF7R being the GOTY from us (because I want Hades to stand head and shoulders above everything else and be showered with the love and adoration it deserves)..... I agree, it's a solid choice.
R.F. Switch
2021-01-25 03:15:49 +0000 UTCHades isn't just my favorite game of 2020, it has rapidly become my third favorite game of all time. This should not be a contest, the fact that Supergiant put out such a brilliantly written and masterfully developed game that can butt heads with the best of them speaks volumes.
R.F. Switch
2021-01-25 03:13:32 +0000 UTCLooks like it's a foregone conclusion for FFVII Remake, which I'm totally ok with, but I'll cast my vote for Ghost of Tsushima anyway. I would be happy with either of those two, or Last of Us 2 taking it. I just think TLoU2 is that much more depressing, and FFVIIR sort of botched it in the very final chapters. So Ghost of Tsushima with it's massive open world, enticing character based side quest system, dismantling of traditional huds, and no business being as good as it is FREE multiplayer. Jin Sakai takes it for me.
Ciaran Lyttle
2021-01-25 03:01:59 +0000 UTCNot voting. Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox Series X is my GOTY.
Master Pantz
2021-01-25 02:22:54 +0000 UTCI’d be curious about the ratio of people who played 13 sentinels to people who think 13 sentinels is GOTY. It’s one of the best stories I can remember and highlights what makes gaming such a unique medium. It definitely has my vote but it’s a shame that it hasn’t got the exposure it deserves (so happy to see it in the running here, though).
Anthony
2021-01-25 01:48:17 +0000 UTCIt's an amazing game but it'll never have the appeal for GOTYs. Too fast paced for every gamer out there
NotJack
2021-01-25 01:45:42 +0000 UTCI'm pretty shocked that Demon's souls (my GOTY) and Dreams (another one of my favs of 2020) aren't on this list.... But man, I honestly don't know which 2 games I would swap out from this list. Despite everything, it was a pretty good year for games.
Shaunak
2021-01-25 01:23:50 +0000 UTCI totally agree. I’m currently playing through the original again on switch just to revisit the world. Fingers crossed for some FFVIIR dlc this year. 🤞

2021-01-25 01:10:19 +0000 UTC13 Sentinels for me since I loved it, but I haven't played a lot of the other ones. I am happy that it made the final list, that's all I need.

2021-01-25 00:33:50 +0000 UTCIt kinda hurts that Doom isn’t getting a lot of love. It’s not the game I voted for but it is probably my number 2 or 3.

2021-01-25 00:31:55 +0000 UTCI would have vote for Ghostrunner, the real Cyberpunk game of 2020 and my GOTY!Last of Us: Part II was brilliant as well though, so I'll vote for that instead
Tariq
2021-01-25 00:24:18 +0000 UTCHappy to see so much support for FF7R. That alongside Yakuza 7 and GoT were my GOTYs this year. Since FF7R already has a good lead, I'll go ahead and vote for Y7. Maybe we can get it to %4 lol
2021-01-25 00:23:42 +0000 UTCThe new flow turns it into a nearly completely new game. The base systems, characters and story are there, sure, but it's a completely different experience
Zkarts
2021-01-25 00:13:45 +0000 UTCConsidering a remake as a GOTY seems weird to me.

2021-01-25 00:09:25 +0000 UTCFF7 Remake for sure. Though It brings me much joy to see 13 Sentinels on here. Underrated, amazing gem, Easily in my top 3

2021-01-24 23:39:25 +0000 UTCI've loved every game I've played on this list (which is most of them), but when I look back I have genuine criticisms of them. I genuinely struggle to find a flaw in Ori. Really think it's an underappreciated gem. Wish more people had played it.

Logan Tawse
2021-01-24 23:18:42 +0000 UTCEasy pick: Animal Crossing. For the year of 2020, Animal Crossing, despite its faults, was THE game for the year. It launched literally as stores closed down for quarantine. The gamestop near me actually locked up the day before so they released the game early. For the time period that followed, it allowed for cozy vibes and optimism that wad much needed at the time. For me, who had covid in april and lost work over it, it helped detach myself from the isolation brought on by that time.
Ricardo Toro
2021-01-24 23:13:18 +0000 UTCVoting Hades when I can see the full results ahead of time feels a bit like voting for a third party, but fuck it. Ralph Nader it is.
MountLatino
2021-01-24 23:12:27 +0000 UTCKind of surprised that Animal Crossing is so low. I think that game did the most good for the most people last year, so that got my vote.

2021-01-24 23:00:42 +0000 UTCIt was so hard to choose between 13 sentinels and Yakuza 7 but only one has Ichiban kasuga so yakuza takes it 🥰

2021-01-24 22:57:39 +0000 UTCI really liked Final Fantasy VII Remake, but I positively adored Hades, so that's gotta receive my vote.

AH
2021-01-24 22:52:34 +0000 UTCDesperados III is my actual choice, but Hades would be second - and I think it's probably my "critical" choice, in that I think it moves the artform forward a bit more than Desperados!
Samuel Cardwell
2021-01-24 22:52:17 +0000 UTCI kinda wish we couldn't see the results before we voted. I'd rather people voted literally for their favorite rather than voting for their favorite between the two favorites. XD
Jeff Kendall
2021-01-24 22:49:31 +0000 UTCEasy Hades pick for me. Dunkey said it best it starts impossible and you unlock easy mode. Storytelling here can only be done in a game. The amount of completed runs and hours it takes to actually say you finished the game is staggering and yet in hindsight it felt like less than half that time.

Varun Kachhwaha
2021-01-24 22:43:18 +0000 UTCCan’t help it, nostalgia takes the cake. FF7 Remake did so much and more with characters that I have loved for years. FF7 has over thousands of hours in game time throughout my life, and the fact that they created Remake and have changed it up, I am 100% invested. Honestly, the music alone deserves GOTY. My close runner up - TLOU2... that games storytelling is simply amazing filled with such uncomfortable moments... there is nothing out there like it. Great list guys!

2021-01-24 22:42:09 +0000 UTCIt's a game that most people can't afford to play though. I doubt most people on this patreon have played it, me included.

2021-01-24 22:41:44 +0000 UTCThe Last of Us Part 2 somehow became underrated in the US lol. How a game with so many awards is underrated escapes me but some people just don't want to give props for what they accomplished.

2021-01-24 22:37:47 +0000 UTCThe Last of Us 2 deserves every praise it gets. I loved how that game made me feel so uneasy every step of Ellie’s Journey. I never played something so gut-wrenching with that much payoff. I know it’s divisive but for me PERSONALLY it’s a masterpiece in storytelling. It told a story wich they knew would not play positive to every player - they just stayed true to their vision for Ellie and her Journey. They made me feel for Abby even more than I could have ever anticipated. Just phenomenal for me. It deserves to get another GOTY title on top of the 255+ GOTY Awards it already got.

2021-01-24 22:37:45 +0000 UTCPersona 5 Royal is literally my favourite game, but I've got to give it to FF7R. Most fun I've had all year, and P5R is good because it's P5, not necessarily the new chapter.
