Cup of Jones - December 9, 2019 - Audio

It’s the week of The Game Awards and I got into the after-party! Woo! I won’t be on the Podcast this Thursday, and with all the reveals that night, plus a surprise State of Play early Tuesday morning, there should be a ton of big news to celebrate. I’ve picked up the pace with Trailer Jones, producing a new episode last week and a new one later today, and I’m working on a new episode for a different series that will premiere soon. Patrons seem pleased with our output recently, so hopefully that buys us (and me) some time to play through as much as we can before our GOTYs. There’s one suggestion in today’s comments for award consideration, and another following the games I mentioned I was looking forward to next year. It never ends!

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

TIM BECHEN - Waiiiiiit a second. What is your Frozen take?? You only teased it last time and I thought you would get a lot of questions about but here we are. Love Elsa. She’s ma girl. Poor little thing. I just want her to be happy. And the music is so good. Maybe the victim of it’s fame... but i love it. JONES - My take isn’t very spicy, because I’ve seen the joy that movie has brought to the world, and I enjoy that much more than the movie itself. I think the music is very modern, which is fine, but my expectations for the score were thrown by the opening number which isn’t anything like the rest of it. I was longing for that Norwegian vibe to come back somewhere, and it doesn’t. I think there’s only one guy in the entire film that has something close to a Norwegian accent. Small, stupid things bother me, like the fact that Elsa creates a giant monster to essentially murder anyone that follows her, including her sister. Elsa’s parents are also extremely horrible people, but the movie doesn’t really explore that. Was Elsa literally locked in her room that ENTIRE time? Was she permitted bathroom breaks? I know it sounds silly, but when I try to get immersed in that story I find these logistical blocks.

JASON A. SACKEL - Could you share more fascinating tales of incidents at Disney parks?  What was the craziest/dumbest thing that you've ever done at one of the parks? JONES - One time I rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad with my phone precariously placed in a very loose pants pocket, and it flew out during a particular drop. Amanda and I didn’t notice until I reached for my phone while in line for The Haunted Mansion. We went back to the ride but no one had turned it in. We then used the “Find my iPhone” feature and saw it, on GPS, right next to that big drop. The park told me the ride was due for renovation shortly and they’d contact me if they found it but I never got the call. For all I know it’s still there...

ALI SALEMI - Since you did talk about your anticipated games of 2020, I would be a disgrace to Yakuza fandom if I didn't bring this up: No love for Yakuza Like a Dragon? Actually I wonder where you fall in general in regards to the Yakuza series. I don't think you've played one besides those two hours with Ben on Y0. Correct? I think Yakuza is the type of game that you would really be into since it has some of the most engrossing stories I've seen in any game series. Now with Yakuza Like a Dragon being a soft reboot on basically all fronts (new cast, new story, new location, new gameplay) I think it's a really good opportunity to give it a try and play for a couple of hours. I think you'll love it story wise. Anyway, just thought I'd remind you of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and see how interested you are in giving the game a try. JONES - I’ve streamed Yakuza 0 with Ben, and I grabbed Yakuza Kiwami when it was available for free on PlayStation Plus and put a few hours into it, but I have indeed ignored that series to my own detriment. I’m almost positive I would become obsessed with it if I gave it the proper attention, but there are just too many things to play. While I would love to offer my opinion on the first couple of games, I feel like there are enough voices singing its praises at EZA already. Sometimes I avoid things because they’re already represented so well within the group, but hopefully I’ll make some time for it eventually. Like a Dragon seems like a safe spot to jump into, despite my lack of experience with the prior entries.
