Actually a pretty cool invention, imagine the city streets covered in umbrellas on lines above the sidewalk, following people around. Or even a more modern version, an umbrella drone that is set to automatically follow your phone and keep you dry haha, kind of overboard when you could just use a normal umbrella but it would be really cool.

Part of the reason this podcast is so great is that it encourages us to think about our own video game upbringing in wider terms. I think back to the year 2003, when I was 11 and reading through the latest issue of Disney Adventures, which my mum would kindly get for me on her grocery shopping. There was a section about cool inventions, and a competition where you had to come up with your own and send it in as a drawing with an explanation of what it was. I came up with an umbrella attached to a clothesline that would open up automatically when it started raining. A month later my older brother came up to my room and told me he had just answered the phone and talked to a Disney Adventures staffer, who told him that I had won the competition and that I was getting a PlayStation 2 with two games. We were all excited a week or two later when we came home from school to find it hooked up and ready to go, courtesy of my Dad. We played a bunch of demos on an included disc (though Tekken is the only one I remember), and that weekend I got started on the two games, Treasure Planet and Space Channel 5: Part 2. It was really nice to be proud of my own achievement and to share it with the rest of the family at the same time.

This is absolutely delightful, I still have fond memories of watching the first video by Kyle. I recommend asking questions like that to your parents if you can. My father passed away recently and I still wonder how he selected the first games for my brother and me when he bought a good PC instead of a console in 1999. He got Tomb Raider, Need for Speed 2, Fifa 99, Riven, Sim City 3000 and Flight Simulator 1995 - an amazing selection of games to get someone started.

Phil Spencer is not beloved - he's the definitive corporate mouthpiece. Pretty much anybody from Nintendo and Sony has a warmer come-on.

I barely write into the comments section, but this was absolutely one of my favorite episodes so far. Great Bosman, great parents!
2020-01-06 06:43:29 +0000 UTC
I love how Bosman always expected his parents to be like most people’s parents who discouraged their kids for playing video games. Being so self conscious about the magazine and so forth. I love it.
My parents, more so my mom, couldn’t stand them. When she found out I owned a copy of Devil May Cry, she made me sell all my “violent” games and allowed me to buy Winning Eleven soccer. Good soccer game. Real good. But yeah, that was a low point lol

Kyle, this was a fantastic special episode of the podcast. Thank you for putting this together and please thank your parents for participating. Lastly have your Mother check out the game Baba Is You on Steam. It's a very unique puzzle game I think she would enjoy.

I remember very well watching Kyle's first video back in 2013 and considered it the starting point to this generation of consoles. Since then, I proceeded to watch every 'Final Bosman' at 5PM each Wednesday (the time it released here in Scotland), which became a tradition I found extremely enjoyable and inspirational. To the point, where I now release my own YouTube video each week in that same specific timeslot to fill the void. Keep it up Kyle, you are well and truly the man.

This was wonderful, like seriously a great episode. It had YouTube Vlogger vibes, y'know? Kyle, I know you're a private person and I'm just really happy you shared this with us. So jolly. Happy New Year to you and your parents (and your sibling(s))!!!
Maybe this is just the Nintendo Nerd in me, but the whole Touch Generation of gaming that Nintendo created with the DS and Wii systems really was successful in creating those shared moments that reached across so many divides. It actually is a shame that Nintendo has put the Miis away for now because those simple Wii Sports games and the success it brought Nintendo could really make the world a better place. I don't know. I just think it's cool how diverse of a population Nintendo was able to reach at that time. Part of it was advertising Wii Fit on every daytime talk show, but I think the other part was the accessibility. I hope we get back there someday. That's the future I want. At least, I think I want it?

This episode is an absolute pleasure! I'd love to see more Allies' family members coming on as special guests in one-off aside episodes in the future. Was grinning the entire time you were chatting with your parents.
I'm not an artist, but the idea of a fan art rendition of young-Kyle's mother witnessing him cussing as a kid is hilarious to me.

2020-01-03 23:53:29 +0000 UTC
I mean, that was so unexpected and so endearing. It made me wonder about my relationship with video games through the eyes of my mom and dad, or the first time that I was old enough and consoles became something that I would have invest in with my own money, like the “pay for half” story which was very close to my heart. A truly great moment for the podcast that is very organic and cannot be replicated. I wonder how my parents felt about how obviously, deeply depressed I was as a young man and if the games I loved like Super Mario Bros 2 or WCW vs NWO World Tour or Ocarina of Time either were to blame for making me an awkward and shy person or help relieved me of my sorrow in a wholesome way. I’m so happy that Kyle shared that very personal interaction with his parents. It couldn’t have been an EZ decision (get it?) to make, the internet been the thing that it is but I absolutely loved your parents wit and straightforwardness, god bless them.
P.S. Your dad is absolutely right about Spencer, he may be the most knowledgeable on the subject but he seems to me like a guy that’s just reading a script filled with corpspeak. I agree 100%.

I find it so incredibly wholesome and great that Kyle's dad knows the ending of box peek, so not only is it this weird crazy thing their son spent years doing - they also watched it and cared enough to at least commit some of it to memory.
