Hey everyone,
It's retrospective time!
The DMC retro has been a long time coming, but I'm glad I took the time it needed. By giving it so much space I got to turn the script into what I wanted it to be and had the room to make sure the edit worked with what we're saying. In a lot of ways, part of what took so long is just constant tweaks. Making sure everything that I wanted to include was included and what we were saying had as much clarity as possible.
The frame of mind I went into writing the script with was that it would be more than just telling you how the games came to be and what they are. In my own words, I wanted to dissect what exactly made these games special and why the series has been strong for such a long time. I wanted there to be an identifiable editorial voice, but one that felt justified because it was rooted in either observation or research.
The retro wouldn't have been possible were it not for Brandon, Blood, Don, and Brad. Brad saved me time by helping out with DMC4 capture. Brandon lent his always amazing voice. Beyond that, he read countless pickups for the script (I really don't even remember how many there were) and always did them promptly with an easygoing attitude. Blood did an excellent job going over the script, not only adding valuable edits but offering suggestions that most definitely bolstered the ending. He was also very adamant with providing feedback on different iterations of the video and his feedback was always immensely appreciated.
Don deserves a special shoutout. He was an angel throughout the entire project and so incredibly easy to work with. I can be a little fussy when it comes to changing things, but no matter how fussy I got, Don worked with me to make sure everything was how I wanted it. Beyond that though, Don has a great creative eye. There are plenty of moments in the retro that he pieced together shots for naturally without any guidance just because they fit well. So ultimately what I'm saying is Don is just as wonderful as he seems. Moreso even.
And with all that said, I hope you enjoy my look at Devil May Cry!
