November Box Peek Update

It’s November 1st (on the East Coast at least), which means it’s time for another Box Peek Update. Here’s what’s been happening:

- In our August update, I had just finished the first draft of the scripts and I was patting myself on the back. It has taken me a ridiculously long time to fix and rewrite them, and this has been the primary reason so little progress has been made in three months. I’m not sure if it’s a Kyle thing or most writers have this, but I spend a lot more time making revisions than I do writing something the first time. Around the beginning of October, I finally landed on a draft I think is Good Enough. I’m still making changes when I remember a part that suddenly bothers me or when we’re recording dialogue and something sounds off, but for the most part we’re locked in and moving forward.

- Also in the last update, I mentioned that the recording process would begin that week. That was for recording the vocals on the theme song, which also served as a trial run for our voice acting process that I presumed would follow immediately and of course did not. We’ve since decided to buy a new microphone for the booth, which will not only be used for Box Peek but each of Easy Allies’ future reviews/Game Sleuths/Podcast Producer Thanks/anything Jones records really. Jones did insist on using the old mic for the last three Souls Retrospective episodes for the sake of consistency. He cares about details.

- We've started recording with Amanda and it's a blast. She’s a legitimate voice actor and it shows immediately. One of my favorite things about writing scripts is watching actors find the life in it, my stupid dialogue becoming real, and Amanda just seems to get the tone and humor of Box Peek perfectly. We’ve yet to record any dialogue from the other Easy Allies, and while we'll never be up to Amanda’s level, we’re going to try our hardest!

- I finally bit the bullet and bought a camera. This was not part of Box Peek’s $2,000 budget (which we’re still under!) and is just something I wanted to own for myself, but camera shopping still created some very sweaty palms. I settled on a Sony A7, which is not the newest or nicest but it will serve the purpose for an introductory-level scrub like myself. It looks like I might have to buy an additional 90mm lens for the extreme closeups I want, so all that’s left there is finding the courage to click Buy Now one more time.

- The completed theme song with vocals is sweet. Personally one of the only things I haven’t figured out yet with Box Peek is how to match the fun and intensity of this track with my doofy paper puppets. Experimentation is the fun stuff though, so I won’t panic about this until my first three ideas all turn out bad.

That’s it for now. I obviously haven’t been able to work on Box Peek as much as I’ve wanted, and I know the next few months are going to busy for all of us. I’ll stick with our current process of giving you an update in another 3 months, so expect one on February 1st. While this has always been a No Deadlines, Put It Out When It’s Done project, let’s just say it will be my nightmare if it’s not finished a year after it was funded. Thanks again for your patience.

Love & Respect,
Kyle

Keep it in the oven

will the word "GAH" Reveal itself? :P

If you're worried about dropping the cash on the lens I'd check out BorrowLenses. They rent out a ton of camera lenses and that makes it more affordable than buying it outright.

You got this Kyle! You take as much time as you need to give Box Peek the Bosman Seal of Approval Quality Stamp. (Also, I want that as a Stamp) *I'm sure Kyle's got some nice prospective on why Game Pubs/Devs often delay their titles. In particular, SONY initiative to not give specific release dates until they are rock solid.

And remember... tomorrow is forever all ours!

Samuel Cardwell

Take your time Kyle , creating stuff is never easy and this is a pretty ambitious project you've set up. Instead of aiming to have the entire thing ready within a year of funding , aim to show us a trailer. Once we've had a taste then you can get on track to really go nuts.

A rushed Peek is forever bad. A delayed Peek is eventually good

Swet T.

That's awesome, just do your best Kyle & other Allies.

Thanks for the update, Kyle. I'm looking forward to it!!

Matt McCarthy

Sounds like everything is coming along nicely!

It's cool to hear about your progress. Thank you for sharing. Creative projects are always extremely challenging, but hopefully you are having fun.

As a fellow creative, I can shamelessly say: it takes me forever to do anything. I am very, VERY judgemental of my own work, oftentimes hating the end result, regardless of how much it's respected and revered by the public. While finishing something is satisfying in its own right, I much prefer the creative process than actually shipping the creation. I guess what I'm trying to say is, take your time.. and ENJOY your time. Box Peek isn't just for us, it's for you. Have fun, disregard deadlines, laugh, create. L&R

Michael Tucci

Good luck Kyle! We all know how great scripted Bosman shows can be and you're clearly putting a lot of effort into this one so I have no doubt it'll be worth the wait.

Bynoe

How about LootBox Peek XD

Wicky "Pokkuti" Salsa

Greatly appreciate the update. Love reading about this process! Really looking forward to seeing it.

Backlog Crusader

I'm so stoked for this.

Daniel Askew

Appreciate the update. Can't wait for the finished product

Karl Williams

Thanks, Kyle. I'm sure it will hasten quickly to an end once you get past a certain point. Just don't release any misleading cinematic trailers or include any last-minute loot box peeks and we'll be grand.

Samuel Cardwell

Take your time, Kyle! As we always see from video games, nothing is good when it is rushed or made to fit a deadline. I upped my pledge for this and am eagerly awaiting the finished product... whenever that is!

Hudson Bilbrey

Thanks for the update - don't feel like you need to rush it. As one Ally always says...."Let it cook"!

Brandon Ray

We know these things do take time, just please don't pull a GabeN on us, we want to actually experience this some day;) looking forwards to the Feb update!

Really good camera choice. Be sure to have a spare battery or two, unless you record directly to your PC. Have a look at lenses from Rokinon and Samyang. They don’t have auto-focus but if that’s OK for you they offer good image quality for a fraction of the cost.

Richard Goetz

Hi Kyle, Placing a deadline on this project might not be a bad idea. Deadlines are usefull for putting just the right amount of stress on you to force you to make decisions, accept them and move on. The risk of having no deadline is that you keep coming back to things, keep changing things and slow your progress down to a crawl. Just some food for thought. L&R Jordy

FreeDoM

good camera choice, looking forward to it kyle don’t worry too much

sam

You are taking waaay too long with this lol.

Sven Van Lathem

I believe in your bits Bosman! I'm sure when it's done it'll be great.

When I am writting my story I spend a lot (maybe too much) time just building the world rather than actually writing. So no, I don't think it's just Kyle thing, we probably all provrastinate because we don't want to commit to a project if we feel it hasn't been fledged out completely, or at least to a point it woulld satisfy. I hope you enjoy the process. I will joyfuly anticipate the release.

I made a joke a couple weeks ago about getting a box peek update on October 30th, totally forgetting that an update was promised for November 1st. Here's looking forward to February (or sooner) (and hopefully not forgetting next time)

Nicholas Poer

Maybe some behind the scenes video update would be nice for some people that are excited for the project =).

Mark Chaivasin

Thanks for the update. Looking forward to it. Hope you'll be able to deliver something you yourself are happy with!

Special Features/VO Outtakes would be amazing! Sneak a camera in the booth during recording sessions! Do it up, Baybeh

VGJunky

I hope you have been saving a lot of Behind the Scenes stuff that could be exclusive for us patrons or what ever you decide.

Ibrahim Sozer

If by bigger budget you mean outsourcing more of the project, that would definitely speed up the process. I've always wanted to do Box Peek as a personal creative challenge though, so doing everything myself is kind of the whole point. We can worry about a potential season 2 much later.

Easy Allies

I can only imagine how good this will be with how much time you spend agonizing over every detail.

ZyloWolfBane

Sounds good!

Ian Alexander

Thanks for the update, Kyle! I am really looking forward to what you put together, but I'm in the camp that you can't rush creativity. Take your time and this will be a home run for you and The Allies!

Kyle, have you thought about what could make a second season come out quicker. Example having someone else edit your scripts. I know you said that you wouldn't mind other people helping with drawings. Do you think a bigger budget would help speed up the process or is it always a Kyke thing?

Ibrahim Sozer

The more you put into it the more you’ll get back...let it cook!

Can't wait Kyle! Keep working we're all excited to see the final product.
