Friend Code: Sonic Forces vs Sonic Mania

Special guest Matt Simmons of YoVideoGames joins us to share his thoughts on 2D vs 3D Sonic games in the wake of Sonic Mania and Sonice Forces, and we dive into the rumor of Nintendo of America clamping down on review copies in light of a major leak.

Audio: https://soundcloud.com/user-698785183/2d-sonic-vs-3d-sonic

Note: We originally planned to shoot this on Tuesday with the Allies, but scheduling conflicts arose and forced me to have to resort to a backup plan. This backup plan was to record an audio-only version using my Yeti Pro and this is the result (rough audio, no camera). We'll do our best to ensure our scheduling is smoothed out going forward so we can record on our normal equipment, but October has been an incredibly hectic month for us all.

Friend Code: Sonic Forces vs Sonic Mania

Comments

I couldn't get through this podcast. The racist comments and overall negativity disappointed me. Not what I expect from something put out by EZA.

Damiani - Overall the discussion was good, it was just some specific things that I took issue with is all. Seeing the comments on YT and here I'm seeing a lot of negativity and I hope you don't take it too hard or anything

VGJunky

Brandon sorta voiced this before, if he was gonna have guests on he wouldn't ask them to tone it down because he brought them on to be themselves But there's some stuff that's just a little too much I guess

VGJunky

I feel this episode was a nice change of pace as an (hopefully occasional) one off. Mat certainly was harsher and rougher with Nintendo than I'm used to, but that mostly worked out. The japanese accent wasn't needed, but talking about a japanese scorched earth strategy is not uncalled for in my opinion, as japanese businesses just sometimes act different than western ones and scorched earth is just a term for a strategy. Either way. I think you made the best out of a bad situation with all the missing people. Maybe Mat + a second EZA member is the sweet spot for future appearances. Otherwise there is always the option to skip an episode. Love & Respect

... You should get the Gamexplain guys on for an episode of Friend Code.

Hate to comment just to complain. I would like to make a request that the language used in podcast be toned down a bit. In other podcast as well as streams I feel the Allies keep it professional. I know this is directed at this Matt guy, but surely Damiani can give the guy a heads up next time to just chill out. L&R

Calling for the killing of Sonic Team probably not the solution - even if they do get moved to other projects at least some (and maybe most) people would probably still end up losing their jobs. Yeah from your perspective as an outsider you can speculate that you'd be thankful for the chance to work on something else by but these guys are called Sonic Team. If they don't want to work on Sonic they could try to move to other teams on their own PS. I would stay away from doing Japanese impressions in the future

VGJunky

Damiani you cannot say, you just cannot at all, say rank the significance without making the Kyle voice!!!

Miguel Pires Ramos

A racist impression and comparing Nintendo’s reaction to the Yakuza. There is no Love & Respect here. Friend of Damiani’s or not, this isn’t the kind of guest I expect from EZA.

Perhaps having a section for light news weeks, like a podcast game, or a trivia bit, in regards to a certain game or hardware. I don't know, maybe if it's a light news week, making it shorter could also work.

Sonic Boom.... the cartoon did catch on, and the Archie run. So maybe yeah, it should cross into other mediums, since that apparently works.

People want reviews early because they want to know before they buy the product if it will be good by the opinion of the reviewer or outlet. Late reviews make anyone who trust you late to the party. It may matter less in these days of preorders and such but I'd think your viewership is more likely to care about that. I think easy allies content affords you multiple opportunities to discuss your experiences with games after the review. Why should games reviewing be different than that of books or films or music or TV?

Agreed, I was jazzed when I heard my question selected, shame it was spent on this guy and not the usual allies (or a better guest). I’ve seen/heard Damiani and other allies cross over with other outlets like GameXplain, or have Ashly Burch on or former GT employees, this is the first dud I’ve noticed. Can’t all be gems I guess.

Mean Man Matt

As far as a Zelda 2 remake goes, I'd like to see Heart Machine, the developers behind Hyper Light Drifter, make it. To me, they'd do a phenomenal job with combat, and the light platforming. And they could bring a lot of diversity to the world aesthetically.

I appreciate the attempt to bring some variety to friend code with adding a guest, but I did not really enjoy this episode. It started out decently; but as it went on Matt seemed to not have the same L&R mentality as the allies and other guests. The review copy segment went on forever with almost nothing new added to the conversation after the first 15 minutes. I normally really enjoy friend code, even the solo Damiani episode, but Matt was not a good fit. His overall attitude of negativity was not something I tend to associate with this podcast.

After texting a link to the podcast to my dad, I got this response: "I guess I need to keep the sled. Haha" :P

Deleted my original comments because by the end of this podcast I just couldn’t stand Matt. His negative tone, his light racism and terrible attempt at a Japanese accent, his whole opinion on Mario Superstar Saga remake being leaked isn’t so bad because it’s a light remake and isn’t really important and the timing of the release was bad... like I’m all for piracy. I’ve never done it but I don’t condemn it either. But, this dude... this dude made this podcast bad. Podcast guests are like a box of chocolates. Never know when you’ll bite into the turd flavoured one. No L&R for Matt.

His tone throughout the entire podcast was so damn negative. Came off as pompous and I’m not surprised he veered into diet racism.

I'm sorry the "ugh dishonorable" and the "very fucking Japanese to follow a scorched earth policy" bit at 1:07 came off really bad. There's a way to get those points across without tipping into diet racism, not cool.

Yeah! Made it into Patrons Pulse, and Kyle took my cartridge color game a few weeks ago. (They even both pronounced my weird last name correctly!) Now just gotta get on Frame Trap to finish the triforce.

I loved this podcast, Damiani got really serious on Nintendo of America. I'm the ones who think that it doesn't matter when your review is released but more of what can you find on the game, meaning quality of finding cons and pros, I think that most of people who buy the game at first week will be actually buying it in the first place without reading early reviews. Reviews should be appreciated as a point of view with a person or professional who really likes to tell us some great thoughts on the game. A complete shame America did not get Fire Emblem Warriors copie. From Costa Rica, cheers to you guys, I'll support you as much as I can

I agree with the above comment regarding the overlap. I feel that the main show for me is the Easy Allies Podcast and hearing the same news covered multiple times lessen the interest I have in this podcast.

Two thoughts. First, I don't think Nintendo is saying you are all at fault, but all will be held accountable. It prevents others in the future from spreading any leaks even if they find out about it. Regarding Sonic, the 3d future would best be served by embracing its world without Sonic himself. The universe is fun, but you can have all of the other abilities (grappling hook, digging, etc) that work in 3d without trying to make the super speed bit work in 3d when it just doesn't...

I enjoy Matt Simmons and he's a good fit on Friend Code. Maybe Frame Trap can get Maximilian on when Dragon Ball Z launches. Y'know, with Huber.

Hey Damiani! Just wanted to say that the episode was great, even sans-video. It's nice to get a special guest every once and a while! I also wanted to add in something that may be worth considering, as long as scheduling works out: It may be best to not record Friend Code on Tuesdays. Given that the Easy Allies Podcast is also recorded on Tuesdays, there is often overlap on the news and/or not enough news to share between the 2. There's typically enough content and stuff to talk about (Doesn't have to be current news), but it offers more options. Take this week's episode...You were able to comment on Nintendo's NA review-hold, which you wouldn't have had on Tuesday, and the EZA podcast would have hit on first, but again, not until late Wednesday night. If they didn't touch upon it, you'd be set back for another 2 weeks before bringing it up. So I'd suggest, again if your schedules allow for it, to record Friend Code on either Thursday/Friday later in the week to keep the record-day separate from the EZA podcast. Loved the talks, and the 2 hours...But that's just me! The more the merrier! :D Love and Respect, -drd7of14

Best episode yet Damiani! I can’t believe it was two hours, it flew by. The back and forth between your guest was superb, the chemistry was great, felt like a true conversational piece. I love the Allies but sometimes feel they sit there like ‘nodding dogs’ afraid to challenge your authority / Nintendo prowess. It’s hard to tell whether having a guest, the great topics, not being on camera or the combination of all these helped, great show! PS - 3D Sonic is dead to me, unless they do something out of leftfield like give another proven studio a crack at making a Sonic game as it’s quite clear Sonic Team have no clue! Thanks Damiani!

Big fan of Yo Video Games and Matt nice to see you doing things together. Who wouldn’t love they’re Favorite groups do stuff! Thanks Damiani!

The Darksiders 1/2/3 team could do a good job with a 3D sonic. They've done the 3D metroidvania/zelda platformer-puzzle hack-and-slash combat pretty well. With the open scope of Darksiders 2 in mind with the horse, that speed with Sonic and upgrades could suit that particular genre better than a 3D racer. Then they just add-in "gotta go fast" moments with bosses running away with them, in a QTE-like segment, towards the end of specific fights. Or if the level was falling apart. Have races against some other characters as well, and play with the perspective. Just don't make that the full game. Let it breathe.

drd7of14

I grew up a Sonic fan so Sonic Mania was right up my alley and I loved every minute of it. I can honestly say that I have no intention of playing Sonic Forces...ever. While I have enjoyed a few of the 3D Sonic titles, like Adventure, Rush and Colors (which was the handheld version), all the other titles I've played for pretty much sucked. Only real regret I have is that I never got around to playing Sonic Generations (had a sealed copy and never played it). When it comes to playing future Sonic titles, it's 2D or Bust for me.

Karl Williams

Look at Sonic Utopia for how to do 3D Sonic

Appreciate the initiative to get guests on here. Even if i did disagree with almost everything he said.

Awesome! just as I started working, this will help me greatly!
