Friend Code - Why I Love Super Mario 64

In our first spotlight episode of Friend Code, get some insight into why Damiani still loves Super Mario 64.

So this is the first attempt at one of the special (or different) types of episodes of Friend Code I mentioned when pitching the idea to you all earlier this year. Not every single episode needs to be a news-focused discussion and feel like a podcast, though future episodes are entirely up to Patron feedback.

As a reminder, if we do more of these types of episodes, it doesn't have to just be me and can feature one or more of the Allies. You'll get more of a discussion at that point, but I worry about the length. I thought this was a five minute video, and it's almost 10 mins -- and that's also with me feeling like I cut a few corners here and there on my supporting arguments.

So with more people, I expect the time to increase by at least 10 mins per person, so even with just 3 people, the episode would be at least 30 mins. This current episode was an attempt to address the shortage of short form content on EZA, so keep that in mind when voicing your feedback -- if you insist there should be multiple people for all episodes of Friend Code, you will not get episodes as short as this.

I look forward to seeing your feedback.

Note: I asked for questions from $5 and up Patrons. These will be in the audio only version of the episodes I will post shortly -- this includes both the Patreon exclusive and the Sound Cloud version. Please let me know if you would prefer the Q&A in the video in the future for something like this. It just felt out of place to me as I was trying to edit it into the piece, and ultimately made the video extremely long as you can see by the length of the audio versions.

Friend Code - Why I Love Super Mario 64

Comments

I really liked this video, and strongly agree with the idea of EZA having more short form content. Though I also enjoy the longer Friend Code podcasts, so it'd be wonderful if these more bit-sized videos are more of an added bonus.

I apologize for the shorter video. Hopefully the audio version was able to scratch that itch a bit. Next episode will be back to a longer length since we'll have a bunch to discuss (EVO, Comic Con, Splatoon 2 Launch, Online App).

So my concern now is these were supposed to be 3 of us discussing the game, which I think would turn it into a more podcast style format again. I really, really want to do Metroid II in advance of the remake, and I'd like to get Blood and somebody else (seems like Ben is really into it). I think we could easily fit 30+ mins of discussion in that, and tack on some Q&A after. However, I think this format could be spun off into something else. Maybe something akin to the old Level show or Video Game Vault style. I really enjoyed making this, but would try to pick a more intellectually simulating topic next time.

Easy Allies

I was worried people would wonder why it was a 9 min "produced" video with then 50 mins of just Q&A tacked on. I wasn't exactly sure what to do with the Q&A video either, it would have just ended up being random gameplay footage from the game. If that's something you'd like to see going forward, I'll consider it for next time.

Easy Allies

I like the format of this video, although I think the content is a little "safe". And I agree with the other patrons, I'd like to see the QA on youtube as well, even if its just a second video with less production.

SuperAfroBoy

Great song choice :)

I gotta agree that differentiating these from the regular Friend Code podcast is probably a good idea, Friend Code Lite? I'm also in the boat where I prefer queuing things up on Youtube while I work, so I'd be interested in even a separate video version of the Q&A. I'm sure there are some logistic issues having two videos though. I think it was a fun way to make something more bite sized and it works well under the Friend Code banner! I'd love to see/hear more minisodes like this in the future! L&R <3

I think you should have released the Q&A video separately since some people like 10 minute videos

Ibrahim Sozer

This was a really enjoyable video! I mostly like long form podcasts and such, but this was also really nice! I have to agree with others that want to make this a bit more distinct from the regular Friend Code podcast. Maybe call this Friend Code Story time? Anyway, I think it can be a really good thing not to be bogged down by strict guidelines for how a show should be! Here you wanted to talk about your love for Mario 64, and it made sense to make it a smaller thing with only yourself! So good job, and L&R!

I wish you had added the Q&A at the end of the vid

Henry Ramirez

Really sweet, Mario 64 was a good time as a kid. I have not gone back to play it in a loooong time.

Personally, I'd prefer if the Q&A was in video form too. I don't tend to like audio only versions of the podcasts.

Logan Tawse

This was nice but I'm someone who likes my weekly podcasts long. It might be an idea to make this a segment(10-15m) and put it on Youtube separately for the people that like watching/listening to bite sized content.

Really nice. Please more spotlight episodes!!!!

Tim Bechen

Heads up to people who don't notice. The audio version of this is 54:30 instead of 9:23 and includes more behind the scenes stuff and Q&A. It's a little confusing, but I'm glad there's a longer version.

I'm one of the people who are a bit tired of the onslaught of podcasts/streams from EZA and I do want more scripted/edited short form shows from EZA, but I'd rather that not be called Friend Code. I love the Friend Code podcast, its one of the shows I take the time to watch every 2 weeks and it does work well as a podcast. If you're gunna do more shorts like this then it should be its own show separate from the production of FC.

Just an idea, you could call these Friendcode Shorts. Just to give an immediate distinction between the sitdown talks and the solo small episodes. Worked well for me, although I wish the audio only segment of questions were on the episode as I don't usually listen to the audio track, so now I have to check 2 things for 1 video.

The Easy Allies having a Damiani show is awesome, I like that it's not strictly another EZA Podcast, but just a show about whatever an ally is sweet on! Great episode, thanks for sharing ;)

Mumble Mumbleton

Im with this. Thought i had an hour long cast to listen to at work. Turns out it's a 9min side video.

David Sobiegraj

Super Mario Odyssey better bring the goods if in 2 years from now it want to be mentioned in the same breath as this.

Derrick DesRoches

This was great, and your story voice is engaging - I'm ok with more episodes like this to mix things up

I feel like you should keep Friend Code a Nintendo Podcast and call these short form videos something else if you want to keep doing them. It just confuses the brand otherwise.
