Zelda Talk - What's Wrong with amiibos in Breath of the Wild?

Apologies for the delay - the episode was done Wednesday, but I just got lost in my Retro Game Sessions stream of Donkey Kong Country today and it ended up going well past 5pm PT.  After the stream I grabbed dinner and then worked on finishing up Yooka-Laylee and only like an hour ago I realized I had forgotten to post Zelda Talk for Patrons. Then we had some audio issues with the original version I posted which I had to fix. So my bad there.

Anyway, this week's episode finally involves some of the Allies rather than special guests. Brad Ellis and Brandon Jones join me to discuss our feelings on the use and implementation of amiibo in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We kind of stretch this one out a bit as I was trying to get us as close to the 60 min mark, so apologies if it feels like it goes around in circles near the end. I think going forward that 45 mins or longer will suffice for topics, and so I won't always try to force it to hit 60 minutes.

Please let me know how you feel about the edit (especially my choice to lay down footage at times rather than just showing us on camera for the entire episode) and the audio quality (worried it's not as good as previous episodes).

Zelda Talk - What's Wrong with amiibos in Breath of the Wild?

Great discussion guys. I feel a little bit bad that people can't get these in store. I have a whole bunch of the amiibo that will unlock the costumes, but I don't use them because I don't really care about unlocking them. They sit on my shelf just to look at.

Great discussion. You did a great job following up and moving the conversation along Damiani. Everyone brought great perspective. If you could keep up the trend of getting allies with specific knowledge/insight into particular Nintendo games/mechanics (like Jones with toys-to-life) this could become my favorite podcast. Amazing work!

I agree, by now if you haven't seen what's been shown in the background on this video or the previous zelda talks....you probably shouldn't be watching anything zelda related. Nintendo sponsored trailers gave away way more. Shoot IGN put spoilers in their article titles before the game was even out!

ZyloWolfBane

I'm fine with mild use of footage, but you started the talk saying no spoilers and the first thing I saw was Link in the green tunic... Same thing last time, you said no spoilers and then promptly showed a complete big-ass map of the world on screen.

I really thought the footage I used was innocuous. It was Link in an amiibo obtained outfit and horse (which we talk about on the episode), riding around random parts of Hyrule with no major character/location reveals. Especially now that it's been a month since the game released, it was all pretty basic footage. More spoilers in any one of the official trailers than what I showed.

Easy Allies

I liked the footage he put over them but I agree that if there some sort of reaction worth seeing then maybe wait a bit before showing it.

Damiani, about the edit; Don't put footage over you guys, especially during times where reactions are high. I like watching you guys' facial reactions (i mean, just look at Brad slowly losing his mind while Jones talks about doomsday scenarios throughout the video - SO GOOD!) its not cool to cover that with footage of stuff I can look up on google or with your potentially spoilerish gameplay (i dont mind, but i know others do) Audio is fine for me :D

What I find really funny is that this is the type of stuff Ubisoft constantly gets criticized for (micro-transactions for additional content) but that Nintendo never really does. That's what amiibo are, except they are much more expensive. I'm glad they are grilling them now because it's crap.

GW Fawkes

Same here. It's okay, the games are great without them

Is it bad that I've never cared about Amiibos. Didn't care back then, not gonna start caring now.

I'm a shameless amiboo collector and surviver of the infamous wave 3 release. I have three open spots on my display waiting for the final Smash figures to show up. I think Nintendo has been pretty open about characters having cross connection functionality from the start. Sure they did not know what that meant as far as content but the appeal compared to competition was they would not be tied to a single experience. Most functionality has been cool with me. I'd say the only two times that did not sit well with me the Splatoon challenges and the wolf in Zelda. Anything that goes beyond a cosmetic function needs to have an alternate path be it microtransactions or whatever. For myself I don't care because I'm in deep but for a product with a history of poor stock and high investment I can see why people would get bummed.

It's the Damiani Tax! lol

Also, stores were selling amiibos buy one get one back in January too. I bought all the 30th anniversary Zelda figures for $25

Thank you for not saying the BotW Zelda gets you the Hylian Shield. So many people spreading that rumor.

There are products that will store up to 200 Amiibo tags on one disk, and allow the user to edit data on all of those Amiibo. (Adding save data to Wolf Link for instance). Sure they cost $50-$80, but you can then carry around one thing and have all functionality of the amiibo. I ordered one myself although I intend on buying the figures.

such a great discussion about this money banking crap thats going on. I am in the same boat as brad. didn't care i lik about amiibo untill I saw the stuff that I couldn't get. Now I have order so many of them :( I am a sucker

I love that Johnny is sitting at the end of the table just like, "What's up?".

I think you missed an important and interesting topic Amiibo Spoofing. That is to create your own NFC tag using your android phone or putting it on a special paper tag. It's a pirate Amiibo, a natural response to the scarcity and spiking prices.

The discussion on whether we should purchase Animal Crossing amiibo now or not gave me so much anxiety. Because I know when the time comes, I'm going to want ALL OF THEM. Great Video Damiani! Loved seeing some Allies talk Zelda with you.

I was just about to up my pledge to 500 bucks but I guess not Damiani! :P

Definitely. I actually wish they'd do that with their other podcasts as well.

Guys, I totally agree. And I have an even bigger problem with all of this. I love collecting amiibos. But collecting amiibos means I put them on my shelf and won't take them out of their package! I love how the package looks. I don't want to get them out, those are collectibles for me. But I do want to use the functionality on those games. If only you could use the functionality without taking them out, but no. I would actually just buy those if they had no functionality, and I would definitely prefer to get those things ingame without amiibo. I mean, those things are in the game. But they are locked away. It kinda sucks.

RedVIII

I haven't listened to it yet but I wanted to take a moment to point out how much I appreciate the care that goes into your work. Keep it up, the language used in this post truly shows your honesty and the fact that you care about what you're doing. Onto the episode!

I definitely like the edit! The occasional footage helps make it a bit more interesting visually, so I like that a lot.

Scott Boyd

You can modify the system clock on the Switch after you've used an amiibo to use it again. Also, I'm enjoying these micro transactions.

Thank you, Damiani. Food is more important, no rush
