EZAnime - Berserk

***SPOILER WARNING***

We discuss elements from all across the Berserk story. Use your own discretion if you're worried about being spoiled.

---

Welcome to the first episode of EZAnime! In the episode, Brad and I discuss something very near and dear to our hearts: Berserk. We cover a variety of things such as important characters, favorite arcs, prominent themes, etc. At the end of the episode, we each give one personal anime/manga recommendation that isn't related to Berserk in any way.

While EZAnime is and always will be free to everyone, $1 and up patrons can vote on which anime they'd like for us to talk about on the next episode, which premieres on 02/28/17. If you are a patron, click on the link below to vote:

I hope you enjoy the episode and as always, feedback is greatly appreciated.

Where should I watch this show? Basically only been a DB/DBZ and Pokemon (season 1-3) type guy in terms of anime television, I've watched a decent amount of films however.

Is this coming out as a podcast?

Tried an episode from the 2016 anime.. the computer assisted animation does not sit well with me. Giving the old one a go later!

David Halvorsen

Ben, I tweeted at ya before about it, but you and Brad should really give The Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade a watch. 12 episodes makes it go by super quick. Just sayin! Either way, great podcast you guys!

Zack

Hey guys! Excited for the start of a new podcast. However I avoid spoilers at all cost, so seeing that the first episode has a huge spoiler warning that covers the whole podcast I find myself unable to listen. Is there any way you could move the spoilers to a designated section near the end of the podcast?

Watamote is great because it is so free from the cliches most anime have.

I really loved berserk when i was younger. Thank you guys.

Kravenar Games

YES! I love that you guys have started an anime podcast, it's about time. And I'm really happy that you chose to start off with Berserk, since I'm also a huge fan of the franchise. But here comes some hopefully constructive criticism: I agree with some posts above that you need some more structure to the show, and that you need to decide if the main topic should be in depth or an introduction/recommendation. Now you ended up in a bit of a weird middle ground where you went into explanations about the story that every Berserk fan already know, while not going into any deep analysis of the series, and at the same time basically spoil the entire Golden Age plot for the ones that haven't seen or read it. Also, I like that you don't keep it a strict anime show and also talk about the manga, since they go hand in hand. But maybe you could have clarified a bit more to people that are not familiar with Berserk that a lot of the stuff you talked about is only in the manga (unless you wanted to go the spoiler heavy in depth discussion route). I also missed more about that - how the anime differs from the manga and how we have gotten the Golden Age arc as anime twice, but only a sliver of one of the many story arcs that comes after. It surprised me that you barely even mentioned the new show, what you think of it and what your hopes are for the anime series in the future. I would love it if you did a Berserk pt2 where you go more in depth. Also - happy when Brad mentioned Macross, but then got confused when he said Rick Hunter, since that is the name of the Robotech protagonist. Sure, Macross is the least tampered with of the Robotech trilogy, but it's still different enough that you shouldn't mix the two up. ;) Finally I just wanna reiterate that I'm really happy that you decided to make this show, in spite of my criticism, and I'm really looking forward to the next episode. Love and respect from Sweden.

This is awesome! Been waiting for the anime podcast you guys were planning and the fact that you started with my favorite series of all makes it even better!!! There could definitely be a little more structure in how the show is laid out but everyone else here already talked about that. Plus you guys are just getting into the groove of things and talked about it the way me and my friends discussed berserk when I first showed them it. But either way keep up the great work and I can't wait to see more. Stay easy allies!

Good stuff, looking forward to the inevitable GITS and Cowboy Bebop episodes. Also, long live Macross.

The Confident Turtle

This is a great idea for a podcast, and I like how it's presented and the interspersed cutscenes. As someone said, it would be nice to split the episode in half , non-spoilers and spoilers. The broad strokes discussion seems like it would be fun for fans of the anime, but it was a bit difficult to follow for me. Couple things that would be nice to lay out up front in the non-spoiler section would be 1) who is the creator, who are some illustrators 2) the year it all started 3) what its influences are in your opinion 4) the number of episodes or manga issues 5) specifically how it starts and what the arc of the first season is 6) an agreed upon place to begin watching or consuming the manga or show (if not the canon beginning), and why 7) its overarching themes or motifs 8) Lay both of your general positive and negative opinions about it, then discuss any differences of opinion. That's just off the top of the dome, but I think sectioning it off the beginning in some way every episode might make for a comfy format, then maybe in the spoiler section you could have a more freeform discussion. All in all, loving that there's new content. Keep it up allies! L&R

aaaawooooooga GATTSU-SAMA~~~~~~

I love this idea but I think it could benefit more from a book club style format. As in the anime gets announced in advance of the podcast so that the community can watch it and send in thoughts and opinions which could further the discussion on the show. I think announcing the anime you're discussing in advance means more people can watch the podcast without fear of getting stuff spoiled as well. Gives us all time to catch up if we haven't seen the show

Really hoping these get added to audio podcast sources like Castbox and Itunes! I only really have time to listen to you guys in the car, and would not mind just hearing you talk without the clips to enhance it.

I love No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular! or as most fans just call it "Watamote" love the new show cant wait for next keep it guys

I like what your doing with the anime clips, I feel like you need to either commit to full out spoilers and make the show for fans of that anime or don't spoil anything and then you can explain what the anime is about, it's sort of pointless telling us what the anime is about when only people who have watched it should be watching this video. Maybe split it in half for viewers who are just curious and want to know why you think it's worth the watch, then have an end segment where you drop the spoiler warning and just go all out spoiling w/e the heart desires. I mean I have already seen all of Berserk so I did not care for the spoilers, but I did not really need a plot explanation or character explanation. Just share your highlights or maybe some of your concerns no anime is perfect, except hunter X hunter.

Pretty good first episode guys; here are some thoughts: - maybe create a bit more structure, fast and loose is good and all, but i think talking about some of these things needs a bit more structure. - Maybe start with a brief synopsis of the series you are talking about - Lay out a timeline maybe ? is it a manga, when did it start, is it an anime, when did that start.... - what is the best way to consume it, manga, anime, movie, game, ... - is it ongoing ? - is it original, based on, reboot,... ? - also, maybe start off without spoilers, try to get people to watch, add a spoiler tag to the video or make it clear, and then dig deeper. just a few notes i though about during your talk. BTW, Tekkaman Blade (1992) is what got me into Anime, please check it out.

Everytime I hear Miyazaki I think of Hayao.

Joey and Cait

Couldn't be more thrilled that you guys are doing this, that said here are a couple of things that could be improved upon: 1. Give it more structure. Almost every anime has multiple forms of media, so starting by going over which forms it can be consumed in, followed up by selecting your favourite version of it (for instance, mine would be the 1990's anime) and why you prefer them to the others(or what's flawed about the others). 2. Break down what you liked about it(music, aesthetic, characters, story, etc) and what you didn't. 3. Have some fun questions. Like favourite intro, favourite moment, worst character, etc. 4. Then do any spoiler discussion at the end(it can be as long as you want but if it's the last thing on the video at least viewers who haven't seen it can still watch the video up until that point (like what you did for last guardian on frame trap) Good start and looking forward to the next episode!

The are in for a nice surprise. haha

Mugen Himura

What kind of anime are you looking for? For starters I would recommend Silver Spoon, Kids on the slope, Fate Zero, Baccano, Great teacher Onizuka.

Mugen Himura

Hoping for a twice a month show. Overall awesome show. Please do not only cover the most mainstream anime, slice of life anime is awesome as well. Please watch Mushishi.

Mugen Himura

I agree with Irvin. I would love to give more anime a chance but really don't know where to start. A spoiler-free section of introduction and what makes the chosen anime strong would be very helpful. On a selfish note, shorter series (under 50 episodes) would be best as I don't have time to watch a 300+ episode series and would not be interested in hearing about them.

Zugdar

Need structure for the show, the change of topics gave me whiplash. Also try to format the show in such a way that you have a non spoiler part to include those that haven't seen it, so they can enjoy this too. In this non spoiler part, you can give your thoughts of it so people can get into the anime you are talking about. There is no way to get people into the anime your are talking about if they never hear your thoughts because they fear of your spoilers. Also state your recommendations on the non spoiler part, pleeeeeeaaaseeeee.

Audio version?

Anime wins again. Great show, and hoping this becomes a twice a month podcast! Now that I joined the EZA patreon thing, I feel kinda bad not joining from day one

Dtzy_Dtzy

Oh I am already scared of the NGE episode...

erni

@Ian, Brad, Ben & Huber Please give Madoka a chance! Only 12 eps long, the less you know the better! #EZAnime

Marcel "Giru017" Frohlich

Seems great, but I have a suggestion about the format. Berserk is an instance of something that has a modern anime, and even though its quality kinda sucks (the CG one), I'm still watching through that one because anime has that social aspect, so I can watch it together with my sister. That means I'm still at the start, since the 2016 Berserk had only 12 episodes... If it ever came to a Jojo episode, for instance, or even in case of this Berserk one, I would love to have a "anime safe version" of the podcast, where you guys only talk about the parts the anime went through already. After that, you could issue a spoiler warning and start talking about the manga/older anime adaptations. In Jojo, for instnace, that would mean talking about the first 4 parts of the series at first, and then diving into the rest, since the anime only covers until Diamond if Unbreakable so far. In one way or another, I'm glad we are getting another podcast!

Great show guys! I'm so happy that it opened with one of my favorite series of all time. I'm very excited to see where you take it next! (Hoping for Monogatari)

Great first anime! Berserk is one of my favorites. Very excited for the future of this Podcast. I haven't been a huge anime fan for the past few years (watched a lot when I was younger), looking forward to hearing about great anime I haven't watched.

Would love to see this in Podcast form. Yea I know you show pictures and video clips buuuuuut, I'd love the option L+R!

Indeed, the lost chapter is critical to the understanding of the world and the motivations of the antagonists.

BHL

love it

Kamos

Griffith is much more than just a demon wearing white, too bad not many people would want to dig deep enough to see it.

BHL

Such a great podcast!!

I'm really excited to see where this podcast goes. If the structure of the show isn't limited to series, I would love to get your take on Battle Angel or Akira.

That was so much fun! Looking forward to the next one, and the Death Note episode! ;p EZA L&R! "A Moment with Manga" ;) do it ;p thanks for a great episode!

Mumble Mumbleton

Love the new show. Excited for Jojo and Hunter X Hunter. Gotta give a shout out to Baccano! 16 eps and just one of my absolute favorite anime with (if you can believe it) a good dub.

You should just call the podcast "It's OK to like anime!" :) Great work!

this is one not to miss, will start up again this summer

Fullmetal Ifrit

Maybe? For this, we're actually treating it like a true video podcast since clips of what we're talking about are interspersed throughout. An audio version could happen in the future, however.

Easy Allies

no joke!

Fullmetal Ifrit

Will these get posted to iTunes too in audio form?
