MAGICAL REALISM - REACTION SHOTS EPISODE 2

Hi, Ian. Imo, Reaction Shots just feels too exclusive. It may limit discussion some but if the assignment was 3 or 5 films that you and/or Huber consider to be some of the best examples of World Building/Magical Realism etc. and you focused on those films then I think it would feel far more inclusive. Fury Road was the first film I have watched in years and I watched it three times leading up to the first episode of the podcast (then I watched Logan (Too intense) and Brazil). I'm somewhat disappointed that both of the assignment films for episode 1 and 2 were discussed so little. Instead it feels like you talked about 100 films I know nothing about. I don't really agree with those asking for news and other things as that is not the way Reaction Shots was pitched. To be clear though, a news segment would be fine by me if others really want it and you are happy to do it as well. Honestly, imo, i think it would be really cool if you made the change I've suggested (as well as others i think, having more assignment films each month that get all the attention making the whole podcast more inclusive) and wrapping it in an Easy Allies Podcast format. I know that would require a lot more work though. I think that just trying to make Reaction Shots more inclusive would be a step in the right direction. Reaction Shots is such a great name for a movie podcast and I think if it could evolve into something resembling EZ Time but for movies it would be truly great. I would also like other allies on instead of guests. Just being honest. Crap, the more i think about it now I really hope it's possible for Reaction Shots to become the Easy Allies Podcast for movies. It would would be sooooooo good. L&R

Enjoying how enthusiastic Ian sounds when talking in these. It's an endearing different side of him we don't get to hear very often. It's fun to get to gush about your passions, and even though Ian has had Easy Update and been on many other EZA things, his tone and mood in those appearances is rarely anything this high energy. Sorry if this comment is so meta and far removed from the content of the actual podcast itself. It's just something I've been enjoying.

Hey everyone! Thanks for your comments and constructive criticism! I am constantly trying to refine the podcast and make it enjoyable and fun while still being informative and thought provoking. I do think I talked too much in this one too haha. Also Magical Realism proved a little more cumbersome to discuss than I thought it would be. The next episode will pretty much turn out to be about Adventure films I think, so it should be a lot lighter and Huber has probably seen more examples than I have! I like the idea of each of these episodes being evergreen, which is why I leaned away from doing news, but if it's something a lot of people want maybe we could do a story or two? Long story short I want this to feel fun and heady but not boring. I'll keep at it!

I mean no disrespect with my previous comment, I hope the Ian and Huber continue to discuss the podcast in whatever way they like. we all have differences in taste and, in my opinion of course, this comes off as a lecture. If I wanted a lecture I'll go to my biology class. Everyone's time is too valuable to sit through things they do not enjoy but If this is what you enjoy then hey, more power to you. Woohooo! I'm in this one!! The magical realism is much more defined in The Science of Sleep. Even more so in Mood Indigo(French film) also directed by Michelle Gondry.

Yeah there is nothing I'd want to watch less than a film news podcast which would basically cover superhero flicks. I like the podcast in theory, it just needs a bit more moderation so it stays more refined and on-topic. It can also use more discussion points outside of "is this an example of Magical Realism?" It's totally on track though. Under no circumstances does anybody need to even be a film buff, just watch the movies if the discussion intrigues you.

I'd love a quick response section in the next podcast so we can have a chance to say something after listening. Here is my response to The Witch discussion. A great example of The Gothic: The Witch didn't really betray any trust in my opinion. Sure, A LOT is up for interpretation, but it consistently showed that Satan was ever present for William's family due to his irrational triumphant vs defeatist nature. The first scene shows that being outcast from the Church in Puritan New England is like being cast from God, then this is followed by the subsequent fear of Satan that William places on his family which makes his family easy pickings for the devil. There are many scenes throughout where Satan is present and it isn't exclusive to the end. I didn't find that there was a particular twist to the magic and it certainly did not betray my trust as a viewer because everything was already in the realm of what I was seeing.

"I would have prefered if they pick a handfull of movies (before the podcast that fit the theme) and dive in them." This is why I suggested the Top 5 idea. It's cheesy and it's done everywhere, but it's such a nice, simple way of bringing structure to the show and giving every panellist an easy way to do research and have a reason to participate. Ian wants to cover everything, but quickly reading off a list of movie titles is not a good way to spark a discussion, everyone's just gonna feel overwhelmed with information and not know where to jump in. The way I envision it is like, "The next movie on my list is [blank].[Blank] fits the theme in the following ways. I like [blank] because [blank]. Other panellists, do you like [blank]? Why, why not?" There's a discussion.

One thing I enjoyed from this series is not actually the podcast itself but the audio commentary you guys did with Mad Max fury road. That commentary was more what the podcast should be about imo. This feels too technical and sometimes it looks like Huber is at a disadvantage because his formation isn't as developed as Ians. I don't care about reviews or talking about what is new. I understand this is a monthly thing and that we can focus on whatever we have chosen to talk about. However, there has to be dynamism and right now everything feels a little constraint. The guest is an awesome idea but maybe its a little bit premature. Have first a couple episodes just the two of you and focus heavily on the example a assignment at hand, and carry on from there. Now if you bring proffesionals of the medium into this and you are not on par with them in terms of been an expert on the field you are at a natural disadvantage and that may be why it feels forced. Ian is elevating the subject matter because of the guest and Huber is a little bit left behind because he cannot say wahtever is in his mind because he is oput of his element. There is a big difference in tone if you listen to the podcast and then go and listen to the audio commentary of the film discussed at hand. I feel that it would be way interesting if you guys go with the tone of your chats in the commentary rather than what you guys are doing now. of course, L&amp;R

I think people reacting negatively to this podcast are a little confused by the fact that it's very different from anything else on EZA. It's not meant to be critical of a specific movie or group of movies, but more like a video lecture explaining specific aspects of film, citing examples. I think Ian does a great job of explaining things, and goes into a surprising amount of depth, and I really enjoy it. I think he gets a little long-winded (and winded) in this podcast, so a more Q &amp; A format might be beneficial in later episodes. And don't be afraid to slow things down! Keep up the good work. After watching this one and the first I have come to the conclusion that I really dont like this podcast. Its just not for me. There are many things that I didn't like and I will mention a few here to see if this resonates with others. First and foremost Ian is almost always talking. A lot of times I feel like I am listening to a monologue instead of a dialogue. I feel that Ian should ask the his guest and "co host" (if you can call huber that since he is hardly talking at all) more questions and actually give them time to awnser and give his own opinion and view after theirs. The second point for me is that there are way to many movies that Ian brings up (like he has a challange to name as many movies as possible) that get talked about very briefly. I would have prefered if they pick a handfull of movies (before the podcast that fit the theme) and dive in them. This also helps with the structure of the podcast since now you are just going from here to there with a 100 different mentions of movies. Last but not least. I expected something different for a movie podcast. I expected a combi of talk about the theme of the month and news and thoughts about current movies. A long podcast just talking about a theme and trying to figure out what you actually mean with that theme got boring for me. I have some other nitpicks but my post is already long. I just want to say that this comes from a place of L&amp;R and I am not just hating on it. At the current state this podcast just isn't doing it for me. Jordy

I think they could do both, start the show talking about current movies they've seen recently, maybe talk about films they are looking forward to and then get into the main subject of the podcast. They could break it up into segments too to liven things up a bit.

This is the second podcast and I now understand this isn't a movie podcast but rather a particular theme and how each works in film. Although very educational I think this podcast is not for me as the first comment said it best. It's like being in a classroom and I find it a tad boring.

I love how much Stephen King came up despite not being actually named. One of my faves specifically because of the variety of ways he implements this theme. Also the Addams Family digression definitely made me want an episode on relationships in movies.

Who framed roger rabbit does have a magical realism element because the christopher lloyd skin suit is never explained. Clerks 2 has the ABC dance sequence. Doctor Parnassus world is never properly explained but it is marvelled at so mayne it doesnt count. But the idea that you can survive a hanging bu putting a metal pipe in your throat seems extreme.

Just a little bit of feedback and opinion: I do love movies and was really looking forward to this podcast once you announced it. However, so far this feels a bit more like I was sitting in a class in film school instead of listening to a movie podcast and I find it really hard to concentrate and follow, and to be honest... even a little bit boring. One reason is, what I already said in the comments of the first episode, I wish you showed clips of the movies you are talking about. (Can be without audio, just show some scenes over your talking) I think it would make it much easier to stay focused on the conversation and it would make it much more interesting to watch. However, I think the main reason is, I'd prefer you talk about movie news or "review" movies that just came out instead of talking about "film theory". Some of the theory is interesting, but it's not what I was hoping this podcast would be and I think only hardcore movie buffs are really into the whole movie theory thing. Like I said, right now it feels a bit as if I was in class. How about opening the podcast with the latest movie news, similar to what the normal EZA podcast does? Talk about the Hellboy reboot and the Blade Runner trailer. I really would like to hear what you think about that. Well, just my opinion though.
