Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap Review

Yeah. If you go in playing this game blind, you might have a hard time with the controls being a bit dated (still fully functional) and general frustration from some of it's quirks, but for me it just feels like home. There's nothing I'd want to change about the gameplay and I'm glad the remake stays so faithful to the original game in that aspect. It just takes a while to get used to, as with most other games.

Would love to see it to 2D Metroid games, obviously not the same art style but the 2D art idea.

A fair score, but I grew up with the game so I kinda shrug when people mention the difficulty/frustration with the game. I beat it when I was 9 years old, LOL. But, I would struggle with the original Metroid now and lots of people would have the same comment about it on my end.

I picked this up on release day for the Switch. I've enjoyed it, but I definitely feel like I have to fight the controls a lot. When you take damage, the projectiles and enemies, especially the bosses, can continue to knock you back like you're taking damage in a Casltvania game. Getting stuck in a pit with an enemy can be a pain because taking damage while you're trying to jump out can cancel your jump. It's either a minor or major frustration depending on the pace at which you play the game. I'm also kinda bummed that the trailers made the reveal of Wondergirl such a big deal, but you only play as either her or Wonderboy during part of the prologue before the title screen appears. After that, you are only ever the animal forms, who are not visually altered based on whether you started as Boy or Girl. The art and music ARE great, and make me wish the game was longer for it! I'm admittedly stuck at the final boss, and each time I die, it's an arduous trek to get back to him to try again.

I'd love to see this treatment on a game like Golden Axe as I think it really gives an old game new life at least I think it would. I am definitely going to play this gorgeous game.

I love when remakes let you switch between the old graphics on the fly. Such a cool feature. Might pick this up someday

Huh. Surprising score. I grew up with a MasterSystem and WonderBoy and would give the original a 4. Very forward thinking game with multiple armour sets and weapons Buuuut- rose tinted glasses and all that I suppose.
