Review - No Man's Sky

What do you disagree with? I think Ben pretty accurately summed up the game. That doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it however; I've put 10 hours into searching only 2 planets and I'm hooked. Perhaps I haven't seen the recycled template worlds yet, but randomly collecting things and languages in a unique atmosphere is keeping me satisfied!

So my comment about the technical issues with the game just get's deleted? Okay then.

I've been enjoying NMS, I haven't been able to play it as much as I've wanted to because of real life stuff so I haven't gotten to that repetition part but so far I'm enjoying my time playing. I would love to be able to farm resources and build an awesome ship over time. I can't wait to see what they also add to the game in the future.

I saw that ninja SFV cameo. I too will be waiting to play this, if ever. Seems like a big time sink for a few moments of excitement and a lot of repetition. I am still happy the game came out and may give developers moving forward new ideas when designing games.

I disagree. On the flipside, you were just making that planet unnecessarily hard on yourself when at any moment you could have recharged by going into a cave or blowing a hole in the wall. You were basically sandbagging, which is fine if you were having fun that way, but needing to sandbag to get any challenge at all speaks to the game's lack of difficulty. I sandbag games I'm comfortable with like Pokémon sometimes, but that doesn't in turn mean Pokémon is a challenging game. I'm just choosing to play it in a way that forces the game to challenge me since the game itself isn't balanced properly to provide difficulty on it's own.

I'll check it out when its €20 and they added the features they wanted. Maybe they're already in there but we just can't see them, my mind is blown how many features there are.

Oh gee, pretty much what I expected when I first heard about the game. lol... Welp, looking forward to playing it for a good 10 min. when it becomes a free PS+ game.

Agree 100% with this review. Unfortunately, the biggest issue with the game (for me) is the lack of variation in the game. ALL the planets have identical outposts (which completely removes the feeling that you discovered the planet) and all the planets have slightly different versions of the same thing (animals, plants, etc). It's really disheartening to play a game like this for three hours straight, visit nine or ten planets, and they're all essentially the same planet - kind of destroys the immersion. Hopefully Hello Games are fast at work on adding some variety to the planets and adding new features that also make the gameplay more varied.

The comment about lack of difficulty should really be reviewed as a choice of difficulty. Leaving a planet because it is difficult and saying that the game lacks challenge is a conundrum. Should we view being able to leave the planet as a choice or a path of least resistance? I made a long post on the forum talking about my story being on the most hostile planet I have first encountered, and how I loved being on it. I could have left at any moment to 100% another planet, but I stuck with it, and it was the best gameplay moment I've had with NMS.

I agree with almost everything in the review, the diminishing returns set in so quickly, and that's almost a fact seeing as how all reviews are unanimous about it. I would add another big negative is a lot of the systems feel really arcahic, like combat, inventory management, UI..crafting is very lackluster. Also I am playing on the PC and the performance is just horrible! I can't even alt tab then go back to the game! and the FPS drops and hitching is almost unbearable.

Great review Ben, I totally agree with what you're saying about how after a while everything starts to look the same. If I didn't use it as a podcast game I'd probably have dropped it already.
