Cup of Jones - 11/11/16
Added 2016-11-12 10:53:04 +0000 UTC
After the events of this week I felt the need to get some thoughts on camera, leading to a 100% editorial, 0% questions episode. As we face the challenge of keeping a generally pleasant and welcoming community running, our chanting of love and respect is (in my opinion) one of our strongest assets. Here are my two cents on what those words mean, to EZA, to the world, and to each other. This goes for all times, not just elections, not just the holidays. Make it your mission to meet new people and always give them the benefit of the doubt. I'm feeling grateful, and I'm proud of what we've built here so far.
- Brandon
Just a quick one, would love to see more spoilercasts like the dark souls conversations.

As much as I love hearing you guys talk about video game news, experiences, and conflicts, part of me yearns for the old days of sketch comedy back at GT. I know your guys' time is limited, and the podcasts are of utmost importance, but every now and then I would love to see scripted shows such as ManUps, Not Funny GT, and other sketches like bonus bits.
No matter what you guys produce, I and the rest of the allies will be happy with it! I just think you all are incredibly witty and could come up with some hilarious, and not so serious, video game related shorts.

I'm on media blackout for Zelda BotW and it's more difficult than I thought with Nintendo basically showing everything they got and it being a heavily anticipated game. Any reccomendations on staying clear of Zelda details? L&R

Two questions for Jones...
COFFEE: What kind of coffee do you drink out of those cups? I only recently discovered different types of filtered coffee like aeropress and it has totally changed how I drink and taste coffee. Curious about how you make your coffee and what coffee you use.
TOPICS: For the EZA podcast and Frame Trap do either Kyle or Ben give you a heads up about the topics you'll be discussing? Do you get time to think through how you feel about these topics before you have to comment on them; if not do you think this would be helpful? L&R

I finally got a chance to catch up on some missed videos, thanks to the holiday, and your editorial topic made me quickly recall a question I asked about a month ago. I'll repost it just for reference.
Aloha Allies, I was hoping you could weigh-in on a heated discussion I had with my friends this past weekend, over the cost vs value of game pricing. Back in the mid 90s when I started gaming more frequently, most of the games being sold, had a staggered price point from about $20 to $70. They weren't really perceived as being better or worse than their cheaper/pricier brethren, that's just what they cost. We seem to be returning to that pricing model where games can be released at costs below $60, but they seem to be gaining a stigma of being bargain games, B-Tier, sub-par, etc. Some of the better games this year came out at under $60, so I find this mindset to be quite disappointing. What are the panels thoughts about the current state of cost/value in gaming?
The reason I thought back to this question, was the nature of the discussion and it involving my own pet-peeve, prejudgement. I've known my friends for nearly 20 years now and the fact we can have really heated discussions (sometimes an understatement), but not hold grudges or animosity, is a real testament to "Love and Respect". I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving, Love and Respect, Namzor.

I LOVE cup of Jones, it's one of my favorite shows. I want this show to be weekly and at least 30 minutes long, Brandon please give up sleep to give us more Cup of Jones. This is the best $1 I spend every month.

Well said, Mr. Jones. This is precisely the kind of thing that sets EZA apart, and what makes being a patron feel so rewarding. And to all of you in the EZA community, I am consistently impressed and heartened by the level of discourse. Easy Allies is always a reliable way to wash off the day's cynical buildup. Keep up the great work. It's good medicine. L&R

Thank you for this Brandon <3 Personally I've recently taken an official break from social media. I'm not sure I'll be going back. It had been a source of frustration, stress and anxiety for while and I finally couldn't take it anymore. I know isolating myself is not really a solution, but at least for now, I'm walking away. All the positive energy I get from EZA means a lot to me, now more than ever. Love & Respect.

Great, great video. I love it. This community is so awesome, you guys are so awesome and EZA is great example to gaming and culture in general. I appreciate you guys and everyone in this community. There is not enough Love and Respect in the world...but it is here at EZA. Thank you.

Hi Brandon, just want to say thank you, both for these words and for all you and the allies have done up to this point and will continue to do. You guys are the best online community of people I know, and I am proud to be a patron for such an amazing group. I will hopefully see you guys at the meet and greet coming up so I can express this gratitude in person. Love & Respect always.

You don't have to read this on your cup of jones. That being said I have an idea for what you can do, and if the allies are up for it, for a quick cup of jones every now and then. I recently saw one of my favorite youtubers do, in podcast form, a quick sort of bio of each person that was associated with the channel. That made me understand them a lot more as not just entertainers but as people, perhaps if theres a demand for it you can all do a quick session with each ally telling their stories of who they were before the easy allies got started and how they got to that point.

Well said Jones.
I was a little nervous that politics and whatnot would spill into this gaming community after everything that has happened this week in the USA. After a week it was silly of me to doubt everyone here because this community is the best in the biz. You all did a great job staying jolly during the super jolly group stream and I commend you for that. It would be hard to have something that you feel so strongly about happen and then just ignore it because you were streaming. You are all class acts and its so nice to not see all of the hate that's been plastered all over my Facebook feed and the news. It's so refreshing having a place where I can go and can always expect Love and Respect, even when it may be hard. It's times like this that we need Love and Respect more than any other and I wish the rest of the country was as caring as the EZA community.
I am not very active in the community, I don't watch streams live and generally don't post much, but I thoroughly enjoy everyone one of you (the 9 allies and the rest).

2016-11-14 14:31:54 +0000 UTC
AWESOME cup of jones! This one really stuck me in a good spot. I think that Love and Respect comes from within. Accepting people for who they are, stop a second and think what that other person is meeting. One of my teachers always use to say "Would I like to meet myself right now?" If you are grumpy and stuff its easier to "attack" someone right away. This could then, even if you really didn't mean it, trigger the other person and a big conflict may erupt. I love this community so much. Being here from day 1 I have only seen people being nice to each other. On occasions when there has been disagreement people tend to sort it out or have an understanding for the other part.
I will fight for keeping the community like this for the future! It also feels even better when "the creators" back it up like in this video.

Love and Respect, Brandon. I'm going through many of the same things you mention; mental illness, taboo topics. Good of you to share for those of us coping. If it's one thing I needed to hear when life was at its toughest, it was what struggles other people have pained over at the same level as I did.
When ever you're in Norway and having a meet and greet, I'm there!

I feel like applauding you Jones, I thought you spoke really well and put out an excellent message, one that we all probably need reminding of from time to time. I’m so happy that Love and Respect became a mantra for EZA, because it was honestly the perfect fit imo.
(Struggling to find what I want to say, so apologies for being long winded.)
I’m less active on Twitch (and other places) than I’d like to be, partly because of timezone and bandwidth issues, but also because I’m am an extremely shy and introverted person that just finds it hard to chat in a group. That said, one of my absolute favourite memories of GT, was the first time I caught a stream live. One of the first things that I noticed was the chat, it was not the typical Twitch chat, when someone joined, people stopped and said hi, nobody was in there spouting console war BS, or being rude or insulting to each other, it was just a bunch of people having conversations with you guys and each other about games.
I was honestly a little taken back by it at first, because of just how rare that is on the internet, but It made want to get involved and from the first time I said hello, people were nothing but welcoming, soon after people even reached to me out on Twitter just to say hey, and ever since then I’ve had an ever growing list of friends who I talk to almost every day.
I’m not exactly sure what L&R means to me, I just know I see it everyday within this community. Whether it’s something you guys do, something a fan does for you, or just a kind word between friends on Twitter, Twitch, PSN or wherever, it’s truly amazing. I am positive there are other great communities out there and maybe I just have have not dug deep enough into them to see it, but in some cases the word “community” can often feel hollow. I can honestly say that is not the case with EZA, it’s the first time in my life where I’ve ever actually genuinely felt like a part of something bigger and I’m not only forever grateful for that, but I’m also extremely proud to be a small part of it.
Love and Respect.

I usually don't go into politics on gaming sites, though the thing I like about EZA (and some other gaming communities) is that everybody isn't behaving like an ass is welcome and nobody is asked where they come from or what color, religion or sexual orientation they have. This all seems so opposite to everything coming from people like Trump and it makes me wonder if there are many people here that did vote for him.
2016-11-13 18:15:29 +0000 UTC
Absolutley incredible Mr Jones, especially your openness about the way anxiety hit you out of nowhere. Fantastic stuff, best in the biz

Love and respect Jones. I'm very excited to meet you on December 3rd. I have been dealing with anxiety. I feel overwhelmed by the negativity, and simple and concise messages like this remind me that I don't have to strive to solve some major issue. Spreading love and learning to respect is one of the easiest ways to make our world a jollier place to live. Thank you.

In a time when almost every publication I read or watch has a hot take that's "screw optimism, there is nothing good about what happened, we're $#%ked," I can't tell you how grateful and happy I am to be a part of this community, to finally hear someone talk some sense and have a positive, constructive message. It's a shame that not everyone can see this video, but I think that it's up to each and every ally to spread this message as far as they can, on their own. L&R forever.

Love + Respect = Compassion
It's very difficult not to take a political election personally. The stakes are so high. You're betting that your candidates are the best choice for you, the country, and the world. Voting is such a personal and private action. It's a lot like love and respect in that regard. Trying to learn and understand another person's point of view has never felt more challenging for me than it does right now. Why do people feel the way they do? Or to relate it to our community: why might someone like the movie Shrek more than the movie The Princess Bride? (Haha.) But in all seriousness, real love and real respect for another person takes time. They are things that can be viewed as "two-way streets," whether that's helpful or not. A community of any size is at its best when there are a varied multitude of ideas from an equally varied multitude of members. It fosters growth.
All this having been said, if I can be completely honest here, I can't get over some of the things that were said during this election. And as I type this, I'm not sure if I ever will. I sincerely hope that we can heal and grow together as a country, but it's obviously going to take more than hope alone. It's going to take compassion, actions of love and respect, and a deep sense of acceptance for one another. I'm just thankful that I have the Easy Allies community to escape into when the world seems so terrifying and problems seems so insurmountable.
Love & Respect,
Hype & Hope,

Impeccably well said. I think in the face of various differences, disagreements, contrasting perspectives, and sometimes harshly opposing stances it's important, at all times, to never lose that sense of having some empathy and at least some modicum of understanding with even those you may disagree with. Life's too short to predicate it on our differences, and not the warmth of trying to appreciate each other. Thanks for this Jones, these are powerful words that I think are so important to hear at any time. L&R, Sam

Very well said Jones. To me I always loved and respected what you guys did at GT and do here with the allies that's why I'm now supporting you all on Patreon. I can feel the love that you all put into your work and respect the hell out of that. Also proud to be a part of the community that wanted all of you to keep doing what you were doing after GT died so suddenly. Showing up for the Huber streams and following you all on twitter. Hoping you all would continue in some capacity. It has been on honor for me to help keep this train rolling . I hope this is something that everyone learns from this election. I was a Bernie Sanders-turned-Hilary supporter, and I was horrified to see Trump surge ahead. The next day I would have to face my boss and co-workers, all of whom were Trump supporters. And I knew exactly what they would do and say.
Which was to express their disbelief, have a polite discourse, and treat me with kindness. These are people I love and respect more than any I've worked with before. Whenever I would see my friends posting comics about "Trump followers" and the terrible, disgusting things said about them, I could not help but wonder how they had entered this political echo chamber. I can see how they would think like that - modern media has left little room for discussion with dimension - but one has to eventually realize that a discussion cannot be had if no one of differing opinion is allowed to speak. Perhaps we should spend less time throwing around simplifications ("libtards," "feminazis," "racists," "sexists") and spend more time listening. You'll learn a lot more from someone who disagrees with you than someone who thinks like you, I guarantee that.

Brandon, do you have a roach problem in the garage? If so, I know of this bait gel that works wonders! (You know, just if you're having too many of them around. I really don't like roaches!) Love and Respect.

Well done Jonesy :). I think of respect as the willingness to sacrifice nonessentials in order to love someone else. Accepting people and meeting them where they are while not sacrificing what makes you unique and what you care for. You can play ALTTP with someone and still not like it (Kyle :P); Love is sacrifice. Out of context quote but one I love "In essentials unity, in nonessentials liberty, and in all things charity." - Hank Hanegraaff

This episode hit home for me in so many ways and reaffirmed by passion for Easy Allies and this community.

Hi Brandon and Allies,
All I want to add is that, no matter how much you resent other peoples point of view, calling them sexists, deplorables, racists etc. is the wrong way. When insults and namecalling replaces reason and arguments, you create a situation where someone like Trump and people like him can thrive.
No matter how hard it is, listening and enganging in conversation/discussion is always a better way to go about things.
I hope the world and my country, where there are elections soon, learn form the situation in America. I also wish everyboy in America the best and I hope the wisdom of Jones reaches the hearts of everybody.

Yay 2 in a row!

Cheers, Jones! Love & Respect should be a mantra everyone should adopt but even if it's just us, we can help spread the word by example. Great video to wake up to, thank you. L&R!

Hey Jonesy, I gave myself IBS through stress a while back, perhaps your stomach issues are along those lines. It's scary because your brain wants to think that everything other than stress is a more likely explanation (especially the nasty stuff), but of course, stress is usually the most likely of all. It's incredible what stress can do to the body.

Still watching, but THANK YOU, Jones! I really needed an episode like this. L&R

I agree with others to make this public... It also will give those non patreons the taste of what they're missing. As for just being a video journalist -
You also a respectful and kind and down to earth person and humanitarian.
The community here is as diverse as the allies them selves , I also include in the word allies, Amanda, Sophie, Norbert,Godfried and Cedro. As they are a massive part of us all.. Love and respect .

Hey Brandon, it's hard to say how moving this episode was for me. I work at a Homeless Shelter in Scotland and it's very easy to go to war with people. A very challenging, diverse and chaotic group of people I work for and with. It's not difficult to begrudge someone and not understand them because of what are doing or have done. Thank you for helping understand what Love and Respect means to you. I honestly feel moved at your burning passion for this wonderful Mantra we all share and express towards each other. Thanks Brandon, I am truly grateful that there is someone like you and the rest of the Easy Allies and the Easy Allies community who share this feeling and spread the Love and the Respect. Love and Respect, Mike.

Thank you, Jones. I got goose bumps and got teared up. You hit the nail on the head. These are the values I believe in. This is a message I would like to spread.
Would you please consider making this video public? In your message you also address non-patrons. As far as I understood it currently they would not see this video.
Love & Respect,
Robin
