Brandon Plays Pokémon - Week 3

Hi Allies!

Brandon is back with more tales of adventure from his time spent in the Pokémon universe. There are new captures, new evolutions, and new theories behind the plot about to unfold.

There will be no episode of Brandon Plays Pokémon next week, but we will record one when Brandon returns from his vacation, hopefully a few Pokémon and a couple badges richer.

As far as the production side on this goes, for the time being we've decided not to change the title and to let this continue to be a low-stakes experimental program. Somehow this week's episode is almost 50 minutes long. We're not sure if that's unacceptable or perfect, so we'll see. As always, your feedback is appreciated!

Love & Respect,

Kyle

Brandon Plays Pokémon - Week 3

Comments

Kyle and Brandon, Lt. Surge is known as "The Lightning American". Source is from Bulbapedia. :)

Love the show! Awesome to see that Jones plays JRPG's the same way as i do often. Highly overpowered!

I liked the long episode. I know nothing about pokemon, but I've seen all of these. Very cosy talks that are more than just about a game, even though they're not. Feeling a small but growing desire to know more about the Pokèmon-world. I enjoy your discussions about tactics and also how different your approaches are. Cool stuff.

This show is oddly appealing. I know nothing about Pokémon. I have no interest in Pokémon. I will never play Pokémon. But I really like this show.

Daniel Ray

Awesome show!!! You guys are so smart!!!! Kyle vs Jones duel as the finale!!!

This is easily my favourite EZA show. You guys should definitely continue the concept even after Brandon finishes Pokemon!

Absolutely love that it's getting longer and longer each ep. I think it's only natural that as Brandon starts to learn more systems and discovers more aspects of the game, the discussions would tend to get longer. Honestly my favorite piece of content being released right now by EZA. I wouldn't want you guys to limit the conversation just because of length, talk as long as it takes to cover the things you have to discuss, whether that's 20 minutes or 3 hours (LOL).

SomeGameNews

I enjoy this show so much! Definitely not too long. Makes me want to play a Pokemon game for the first time in probably 20 years. Keep up the good work!

Robbert Roodzand

Im sure people will say if they think a show gets too long, no need to ask. Im not sure how long a more editorial section would have to be for someone to be genuinely annoyed about it!

Loving the series, looking forward to it every week! and yes Brandon, pokemon that you've caught will always listen to you no matter how overleveled they are. They'll only disobey you and loaf around if you aren't their original trainer (traded from someone else) and are leveled over your current badge level limit

Nut Kon

Episodes can't be long enough. Most entertaining show currently running, keep it up!

Brandon I had the exact same problem when I played this 20 years ago I was stuck in Cerulean city for at least a whole week! I ended up with a way overleveled venusaur. Love this show keep it up!

Rosamune

These videos could be 3 hours long and I wouldn't care. It's fun seeing Brandon go through a series I love for the first time.

People say they needed to be traded to disobey, but I remember my charizard having an attitude late game and I never traded....

Taubel

The Lavender Town music makes me think of a Pokemon comic (manga?) I read as a kid where there were dead pokemon that had come back to life, rotted flesh and all. Yet I can't find any mention of it in Google search.

In the Pokemon anime, Ash sends his Pokemon to Prof. Oak's lab to be babysat, I thought, so I have always assumed we send them to Bill the Pokesitter. Though I like Jones' idea of how they are transported xD

in regards to Bill's PC, in the show pokeballs shrink even smaller and they're fine there so I always assumed that it worked like those air tubes at the bank, except really small

I love this show so much, though now Brandon is taking better notes I think it behoves Kyle to do a little more prep, rather than just relying on his superior base level of familiarity to wing it through.

Tygre

this is probably one of the shows i look forward to the most honestly

I love this bonus show so much. I'm playing along, although I'm way behind Brandon. -_-

Robert I.

After watching the podcast I kinda wish one of the Allies hadn't played FF VI. I'll like to hear about that journey from someone who hasn't played it.

Gonzalo Ruiz

Jones is right: only traded Pokemon will disobey if their level is higher than what your badge can handle :) Great episode again, I'm loving this series!

Sebastian Erben

Hey kyle! if you guys took the episodes that long wouldnt that promote faster runs through games... so you can get brandon to play more games?

lmao leave it to Brandon to throw down on a Golden Child reference. Why dude! Whyy!!!

i own a 3DS but used it 10hrs tops in 3.5 years. However Pokemon Yellow was my first Poke game and I never played Red or Blue. You are making me all nostalgic guys, I might pick up Red myself and get some use out of that 3DS!

Zan

Quote of the week, "I'm going to Stevie Wonder this!" -B. Jones

It would be hilarious if Brandon's Charizard would be the Pokémon who disobeys

This is the most wonderful show ever so 50 minutes long episode is definitely perfect! I started playing Red after I watched first episode and I love it. I played Heartgold before, but I don't remember it much, it didn't really make any lasting impression on me and I think I didn't even finish it. But I'm having a blast going through Red, talking with NPCs, learning all this new stuff and comparing my progress and my impressions of the world to Brandon's playthrough. (got 4 badges, my main is my Venusaur, named him Wrex and he's level 36 I believe and yes, S.S. Anne left the harbor before I was 100% finished there too and I barely made it out of the caves after all those self-destructions, literally the happiest I've ever been to see Pokecenter outside of tunnel or cave or whatever) This show really made me appreciate and enjoy pokemon, thanks for that! Also I wonder - what does Brandon do with all the items he gets? I mean, he says he likes to have everything just in case, but there's a lot of stuff in Red and the inventory can't hold it all. I had to toss away couple of ice and burn heals at one point because some NPC wanted to give me something or I just found an item lying on the ground and I didn't have room in my backpack. What did he do with moon stones and nuggets for example? And does he have a bike? I don't recall him mentioning that... And one last thing - going through the dark caves without flash, whoa, very bold :D respect!

Monika

What do you mean 50 minutes is unacceptable? This show is oozing with nostalgia and I love it as it is.

Olivier

Oh man, going through the dark tunnel without flash xD

Andrew Chalmers

"You could also just pass out"xD

Andrew Chalmers

Man talking about the SS Anne bring back memorys! Cant believe Jones got through the caves without using Flash also haha!

Ryan Hegarty

Great episode. Love this show. Kyle I was wondering if you have ever played the Shin Megami Tensei series? It's like Pokemon for occultists. I was just thinking about it when you were talking about being upset to stop using certain pokemon when more powerful/cooler ones become available - in SMT you have to fuse two or more of your demons together to create more powerful ones - I would always get upset if I got really attached to one. i wouldn't want to fuse it, but you really have to to progress. The series is tough. It's definitely super interesting from the viewpoint of someone who loves Pokemon. SMT4 on the 3DS is great.

You guys really struck gold with this series. Amazing job

Sorry for "spoiling" but there's a cave that takes you back almost to the beginning of the game. It might be a second exit of one of those you've already been to. Love and Respect!

Lmao Jones is getting pretty good with his predictions ...

Ben Metal

Brandons pokemon WILL turn on him it will just happen faster with traded ones.

Also his own pokemon WILL turn on him it will just happen faster with traded ones.

and I named my rival Kyle this time

started playing Pokemon Red because of this, I only played Yellow back in the day.

50 minutes is perfect!

Just my two cent on the length of the episode being either too long, or just perfect: I LOVE IT! They could be even longer in my opinion. I played my first pokémon game when I was about 8 years old, and from then on, and until well after I'd completed silver for the first time, I lived and breathed pokémon. Those games were magical to me. One of the reasons I love this show so much, is that it reminds me of that time - reminds me of myself just trying my way through this game, in a time where walkthroughs weren't easily available. For example, I also overleveled like a maniac, and I also went blind throught the dark tunnel. I actually got pokémon yellow for my 2ds after i watched the first episode, and it's fun to compare how Jones is trying and learning his way through a game, that I just can't play the same way anymore, since I almost know these games like the back of my own hand. My god, those games are just amazing. I also love the newer pokémon titles (seeing the pokémon in full 3d in Y for the first time, blew my mind. I almost shed tears of happiness on behalf of my past self, knowing how much pre-teen-me would love it), but those early games had something magical and mysterious, that the newer games just can't match for me somehow. Anyways, this turned out way longer than I wanted it to. So to summarize: long episodes like this one please, and thank you Bandon, for reminding me of feelings I had almost forgotten (and i dig your playstyle; grind hard, win hard!). Looking forward to the next episode! Love & respect

I know you're going for a completely fresh playthrough, but when I got Pokemon fresh in 1998, I spent a good amount of time reading the manual from top to bottom. At the time manuals were an essential part of the game, providing crucial information to actually PLAY it. Maybe these conversations are more fun if Brandon has a deficiency of info, but consider giving it a look.

Evan Lewis

I don't mind the long episodes. In fact they could be even longer. This show is so comfy.

Olf Himself

Masterball Theater wasn't good enough for you, Bosman?! Well how about Brad Played Pokemon? Cause he's only talking about it!

Stephen Smith

Explain to Jones why he would need to trade; please.

Randy Verschueren

50 minutes talking about Pokemon could never be unacceptable Bosman.

This show is so much win. Love it!

That's it I'm doing it after watching these videos. I've got Pokémon Yellow I'm sticking to the rules and I'm going to play this series. I hope you guys keep doing this style format with other long going series with someone from the allies who hasn't dabbled.

These videos are so awesome. Please guys play gold or silver after red.

Almost 20 years ago, I was a little kid at Disney World playing Pokemon Red in my downtime. Something about Brandon doing that now...it'sjust so charming.

I'd love to see this format with other "classic" games that one ally loves and another has never touched. The combos are infinite and everyone wins!

I know it seems long looking just at the minutes and seconds of the video, but I honestly couldn't imagine cutting a single minute from this or any of the previous episodes. The depth of discussion thus far is on point, keep the episodes as long as you need them.

Walker Hope

Please please please please do this format with more games! something like the 'just played' videos you used to do but longer form! huber playing through dragon quest 8 again? talk about it to us. Ben going through a new jrpg? talk about it! Kyle getting new perspective from playing an old classic he missed? let us know. these are some of the best things you all do, and Id love to see more.

The longer the better for me!

Eduardo

Great show, keep it going, I doubt you'll find any resistance from us patrons!

Chip Damage Mike

This show is absolutely brilliant, and could easily just be it's own channel if it was fleshed out more, nice job.

Glad you guys stuck with the name, and I think the length is perfect! I think the videos should go on as long as Kyle has questions to ask and Brandon has stories to tell and theories to present :)

Austin Brackeen

I really enjoy this show, and would like to see more along this line with an experienced ally leading another into a series they are totally unfamiliar with.

I need to stress how much I appreciate this show. Old games deserve the spotlight just as much as new ones.

Kyle/Brandon, I have to say this is probably my favorite EZA show and one of the coolest things you all have done in a long time. It's perfect for what it is right now, but I hope you can find a way to take it forward (maybe with other Allies and other games or whatever). Kyle, especially, you're excellent as a moderator e.g. for the podcast and it makes you perfect for hosting this as well. You're really good at controlling the pace but letting Brandon tell the story.

Bradley Spies

These are great :) A "Bosman plays Mario 64" would've been pretty cool too.

Kyle Bosman you are a fun guy
